Do I need a 4pin-4pin DV cable or a 4pin - 6p -with Canon MV 850i
I have a Canon MV 850 i camcorder and I'm trying to convert analogue tape to digital for saving to PC.
I know I need a DV cable CV-250F, however, I don't know whether it's 4pin-4pin or 4pin-6pin cable that I need. The camera, I'm pretty sure is 4pin. I'm not sure how to identify whether the PC has a 4 pin or 6 pin slot. My PC is Fujitsu Siemens product code 830 019692. I could draw the slot on the back of my PC, but I can't tell whether it's 4 pin or 6 pin !!
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

You will need an analogue to digital converter box.
You connect the camera to the converter box with analogue cables and connect the A/D box to the PC with a firewire cable.
Note: Many mini DV cameras with analogue inputs can act as an A/D Converter box.
you would need a ieee1394 4pin cable for the camcorder. of course the other end of the cable would depend on the computer's ieee1394 jack you'll be connecting the cable to. there are 2 types of ilink cables: 4pin-to-4pin or a 4pin-to-6pin (firewire 400) cable. latest mac computers uses a firewire 800 port so if your using one you may need a Moshi 800 to 400 firewire adapter if your having compatibility issues. see: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW748LL/A for more information. hope this helps. thanks:)
your camcorder doesnt support usb connection.although it came with a pc serial cable, its the cable used for memory stick picture transfer, along with it comes a serial port adaptor for the memory stick and ac adaptor for serial adaptor. of course even if you lost this accessories you can still transfer pics from the ms using a memory card reader which works basically the same way. for videos on the tape you would just need a firewire or an ilink (ieee1394) cable. almost all mac computers support this connection.it's the dv in/out jack on the camcorder with an i symbol.upper most jack on the camcorder jack's location.check your mac to find out what cable you need.the unit uses a 4pin ilink port so you need a 4pin ilink cable at one end and the other end should match of course, the firewire port on your mac computer.should be a plug and play connection.you can use imovie software for video capturing.hope this helps.thanks :)
You need a computer with 1394 firewire card and a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable. The 4 pin end goes on i-Link connector on camera end the other end of the cable on the computer card. If you have a notebook, will you need 4pin to 4pin firewire cable.
Mini dv is a digital recording and VHS is analogue so they are incompatible. Does your camera have an analogue output? That is a lead that ends with something like RCA plugs or a Scart plug. Then you can feed the signal into a VHS recorder.
