HP HP Pavilion dv2000 no display

1) Please make sure that the HDD IDE cable is plugged in properly on both ends. It is a 40 pin female cord which should be seated on IDE channel 1 on the motherboard.

2) Make sure that all the CD/DVD drives are on IDE 2 or on SATA

3) Make sure taht the Jumper setting on the back of the HDD is set to MASTER

4) Login to bios and make see if you can find the HDD from the IDE drives menu. I am sure you will. From Boot menu select the NATIVE mode that will activate both the SATA and the IDE channels. Select HDD as second boot device.

It could also be the conncetion came loose, which can happen with IDE hard drives if the laptop gets moved around a lot. Remove the hard drive and take it to an electronics store to have it tested, or if you have a friend with an external enclosure (2.5" IDE interface, they cost between$10-20) you can hook it up to another computer via the USB port

For getting data off of old hard drives, a USB to IDE/PATA connector is a wonderful tool. My favorite is like this one, with a dual head - one side for 3.5" & 5.25" IDE drives and the other for 2.5" IDE drives. That covers the vast majority of older consumer-level equipment.

Just hook your old drive to a device like this, then plug it into your USB port. It will automatically show up as an extra drive so you can copy the data off.

google sata drivers, abut this is not all you are going to have to do.

You might first check to see if ide is active in the bios.
