How do I do a complete back-up of my PC?

How do I do backups? I have not been supplied with any instructions with the unit.

    i purchased an iomega Select Desktop Hard Drive 500GB and this came with no instructions. I formatted the DHD and then some how transfered (i think my files). Now what happens? How do i over ride changes, how do i see what i backed up?

Backup is 2 types ,
u can use default backup method by windows provided in sytems tools,it is not useful if hdd crash
the best method is writng a DVD or cd and keep it safe place,
you must note that no hard disk wender are not giving the data warranty on your hard disk

If the power supply doesn't delivers the correct current the hard disks can't spin fast enough and this is detected as a failure by the pc, which cuts the connection. Hopefully by replacing the source all will go back to normal. Otherwise you will have to crack open the cases, remove the disks and install them directly in a desktop to try to access the data on them.

First run check disk on the drive [chkdsk] [Drive Letter] from a command prompt. It sounds like you have a bad sector on the drive.

When that is completed run defrag on the drive

Accidental disconnect during backup, now cannot do backup


I suggest you to format it via disk manager and see.
You can delete the partition and create a new one.
To do that open control panel then administrative tools then computer management then in the left column click on disk management.
it will scan all active drive connected to your pc.
Ok format it at your convenience.

I want to backup my computers (4) and have maxtor partitioned and used at purchase time, but now when I connect it I get no prompts or choice of hard drive to back up. How do I go about back up?


You have a varity of option to do your backup depending on the type of backup you want to do.
1 Documents and folders
To backup your document and folders you can just copy the Documents and folders to the external drive.
You could also use the backuo feature of the Operating system you have like windows backup to backup your documents and folders.
2 System backup of your system.
You can not use a copy accross to do the complete backup of your system. You can use the windows backup to do this or a third party backup software.
Windows Back for Windows 7.
Click on Start ----- Controll Panel ----- System and Security ------- Set up Backup ------ Select where you want to save your backup ( the external Drive you connected to your system) in the box ------ Next ----- Choose the files or drive you want to backup and click next ------- Review your backup settings and save settings and run back.

This will save your files to the external drive you added to your system.

That depends on what software you used to back it up the first time. What you're looking for is called an incremental backup, and should be accessible from the backup program you used previously. The most efficient way to run it is probably to schedule it to be run periodically, and then it will run automatically. For example, in windows xp you use the backup utility found in start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Backup.
You select the files you want backed up, select the parameters for the backup, and this creates a backup job. Then you run that job, either now or on a schedule. You can create various jobs to backup various data, and each can have its own schedule, or be run once. Detailed instructions for doing this in xp are found here, here, and here.

Another excellent free backup program is Cobian backup, with downloads and instructions available here.
Finally, you may be interested to read this article, which explains many of the terms involved in making backups, and also stresses the importance of organizing the backup data, so that you may easily access specific items when needed.

Very Simple. Just connect the Maxtor External Hard drive to your new laptop. Open Windows Explorer and you will see the Maxtor appearing as a Drive. Access the files from the explorer.
My advice is that create a new folder on the maxtor and then do a backup of your new laptop on to this new folder.
DO the same for your office PC.

Seagate 250G running out of space


creat incremental backup rather than complete fresh backup.
empty trash can.
either way, it's possible the backup drive uses up more than working drive especially adding/deleting files alot between backup's.

I like ones like you who already understand that a lightening power surge can really kill the computers will to live lol

1. always put the computer on a surge protection strip or even better a UPS backup device to protect it from surges , and in the case of brownout the UPS backup would take care of that circumstance
or at least some kind of VR , voltage regulator ... not that computer powersupplies do not protect the PC , the PC powersupplies of today to have some built in protections , but ooops there went your power supply anyway if you know what I mean.

2. if you suspect the power supply is the culprit , you can test by using another power supply
which is a good investment because if it was the power supply you just got yourself a nice new one
and even if it's not the power supply , you still have a nice new one in your hand

a power supply in the hand is worth two in the bush :-> lol

and if it's the motherboards fault , at least you'll already have your nice new power supply for that new motherboard you get.

a good strong power supply is a good investment no matter how you slice it.

I always keep any spare power supplies I get , because you can use them while your dead power supply is being RMA-ed or sent back. ,, that time gap is not fun lol

My friend if you back-up your files then at work you should have software to unpacker is well. Backed files must be unpacked b4 you can see it on ur PC.

Cannot access files


try starting the pc with the unit plugged in. then after the pc is completely started and the desktop is set then directly restart it manually (not by cliking on restart) then allow to scandisk all the drives, do not remove the external unit. it will alos scan and may be the file system problem will be gone. and u will get ur data. if not success then tellme. i will give u another guarranteed suggestion,. ok.
