Freeagent 500 GB external not detecting - whirring sound

Hi,

I have a brand new Seagate Freeagent 500 GB USB Drive that I very stupidly dropped from the table. Now when I power it on, a whirring and clucking sound is heard for a few seconds and then it goes quiet. The light remains ON. However it is not being detected in windows. I have very important data that I cannot afford to lose. At the same time, I dont want to opt for costly data recovery. Any idea how I could diagnose and reapir the problem myself?
Thanks

Id like to know if its possible to open the case and repair it....I have warranty but I dont think seagate gives free data recovery. I cannot afford to lose my data. When ever I switch it ON, a whirring sound is heard and the LED keeps blinking and nothing is detected. The whirring stops shortly. Please help! Are there people in Bangalore who repair these things for cheap?

Do you Still Have warranty on the unit?, If so have a chat with the place you bought it from, i don't think you should mention that you dropped it. but say it just malfunctioned. if under warranty they might opt to give you a Free data recovery.

Technically, handling damage is not covered by warranty. the warrenty will get you a new drive.

i am afraid costly data recovery service is the only way to go. the noise is probably coming from head/media damage. the light simply indicates the drive is busy (trying to execute the command host has posted).

OMG! it worked! I have a 500 gb seagate and I dropped it very hard on the floor....

My hard drive was dead and wasn't recognized by the computer, it didn't even start, just a few clicking noises, which according to some of the experiences is the same as a DEAD Hardisk. Anyways, as I read that sometimes this happens as a result of a hit, well, I wacked my HD as a last hope for it to recover its "memory" (as in the movies) and believe me or not, it worked! I don't know if this might help yours, but it saved mine!
The way I did it was like this: I started the pc and when the HD started to run and I heard a couple of clicks, I hit it against the table while in vertical position (assuming that the arm of the HD might slightly move better that way) one time, and then when the spinning and the first click was heard agin I hit again. After that I heard the typical searching sound of a HD, and you can imagine I started to pray that what I heard wasn't my anxiety sound (if it has any). Now I am a firm believer in the old trick of whacking the old TV to get the vital signal back!
Good luck to you too!

yah you must buy a Y-USB cable for your external hardisk. this is connection both ends are one is for hardisk and the other two cable is for USB slot of computer. why it two wires connection to usb because one wire is for Data and the other is for Power. If doesn't work..it might be a problem in your Operating system. i recommend to you to reinstall your Windows OS.. theres a 4 reasons why it happen appear the error... deffective USB cable..corrupted driver of USB device for seagate, virus infected of your systems..and maybe your hardive is deffective. Please rate if this is HELPFUL..thanks

Open up the control panel with the drive connected, open administrative tools and computer management. Select storage and see if the drive is listed there. It will probably let you format it from there.

USB Not detecting

First check if other usb data drive like is pen drive is getting detected. Check all the usb ports. Check the Seagate drive with other computer if you have.Restart the system in safe mode and check.Try to create new admin account and check .If also chck the usb cable to make user it is not defective. If nothing works probably your hdd is gone bad. Good luck.
