it won't pick up my new hard drive i bought and put in

  • stuberlake Apr 25, 2009

I repaced my hard drive about 4 months ago and the laptop worked great until last week. I got blue screen errors a couple times, was able to reboot then it would not boot at all...
Running diagnostics now - it passed the Self test and is 1/2 way throught the read test.

Last night I tried to install a 2nd windows - it still would not boot.

Will reformatting and reloading make a difference? Hate to do it because it looks like everything is there - just not recognized.

If you press F12 during bootup, you should get the boot menu. Run the hard disk diagnostic. If the hard disk is bad, you will get a DST Short Test Error code.

Replacing the hard disk in a D600 is a piece of cake though so if you need a new HD, it's easy to do. The tedious work will come afterward.

The error PXE-E61: Media test failure usually means the hard disk has failed or the hard disk needs re-seating or the disk controller is faulty. First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

Hard drive noises usually indicate a mechanical failure. Call dell and have them resolve the issue with a replacement drive.

My acer 7520 opens with an error reading NVIDIA boot agent 249.0542, then reads PXE-E61 media test failure, check cable, PXE-M0F exiting NVIDIA boot agent.

This error message could be a faulty hard disk or a faulty disk controller.
Reseat the hard disk to see if the problem is fixed.
If not go into the BIOS settings and check if the BIOS can detect the hard disk.
If the hard disk is not detected then remove the hard disk and connect it to an USB hard disk adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If the this computer cannot detect it as an external hard drive then the hard drive is faulty. Then the Acer needs a replacement hard disk and Windows installed together with the laptop's device drivers and programs etc.

H.D failure

Its definitely the Hard drive that might have crashed. You can try booting the system by using a windows CD and see if it boots. Secondly you can try using a different hard drive from some other laptop, if you know someone using this one. Or you have to purchase one. If you think of replacing it with a new one, I can assist you to replace it. Dont take it to a service center, they would charge you a good amount.

Dell Latitude D600 with new Hitachi 30GB Drive Not Recognizing

XP install is not detecting any hard disk.
No jumpers are required for laptops, can only have one hard drive in a laptop.
Check the BIOS for the hard disk configuration, make sure that it is set on Auto (detect).
You may have a faulty hard disk, you can check it by booting up with a floppy DOS boot disk, run fdisk to see if it detects the hard disk, OR connect this hard drive to a USB hard disk adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port and if it detects it as an external drive the it is OK.
