Question about Sony DVD-ROM DDU1615-ZB 16X IDE 512KB 100 85MS BEIGE WITH SONY LOGO BULK. LEAD DVD Drive

Internal CD ROM will Not Open

I have a internal Sony DVD-ROM DDU1615 on my Dell Optiplex GX620.
Recently when I attempted to open the drawer to play a CD it would not open. The motor to open it was running but did not bring the CD tray out. I had to use the "emergency" opening procedure (the small hole). When I put the CD in the tray, closed the door, the DVD-ROM would not read the CD, the (I guess) opening motor kept running. I again used the small hole to open the drawer to take out the CD. If I close the door the motor keeps running, so at the present time I have the drawer out so that the motor will stop running.
I would appreciate any suggestions as to my next move. Thank you

Thanks for the quick response. I was thinking that replacement would be the solution, just needed confirmation of my initial thoughts, thanks.

Not being that proficient at hardware replacement, can you recommend a Web site, location, etc that could provide the specifics that I could understand to replace the DVD drive. If I had to pay someone to do the work, what do you estimate the cost to be for the labor? I do not mind paying for work, but do not want to be taken to the "cleaners" for the work.
    Thanks again.

Unless you can do electronic repair yourself and have the schematics for the drive it will be far cheaper and easier for you to simply replace it. Any DVD drive for computers will fit in there. I would buy a new one rather than used so you make sure and get the software with it. Replacing the drive is a 30 minute job at most.

In a nutshell what happens is this:
    Remove computer cover
    Unscrew four mounting screws
Unplug power and data cables from the drive
    Slide old drive out
Note jumper position on old drive, set new drive to match
Slide in new drive and plug in cables
Test new drive and install software
    Screw in mounting screws
    Replace computer cover

If you take your computer somewhere to have this done expect $75 or so for the labor.

Sounds like there's something stuck inside the DVD drawer that blocks the drawer from opening if it's not its side. Try turning it over onto the other side, just for a minute, and see if it opens. If it does, there's something blocking the drawer. If it doesn't, you'll probably need a new drive, as that one's literally worn out...which I've only seen twice.

Benq DE350/De325 dvd player has a cd stuck and no matter what we have tried can not release it to open up and retrieve the stuck cd

I think I can help you. Before you do anything turn your computer all the way off. All you need is a small paper clip. Open the paper clip up so its a straight peice of wire. Now look at the face of your DVD Rom you should see a pin hole opening about the size that paper clip will fit in to. Push the paper clip in to that hole. Push firmly and your tray should pop open enough for you to pull it out the rest of the way.Now take out the stuck CD and start your computer back up the drawer should pull back in if it doesnt give it a slight shove and it will. After that you should be able to use your player again.

I hope this helps you out if it does please give me a YES on the page you recieved this response on. Thank you.

I'vd got not driver

Windows 2000 and XP and Vista and 7 have "built-in" device-drivers to allow you to read "data" files from CD and/or DVD drives.

However, you need software, such as 'PowerDVD' in order to "play" pre-recorded audio/video content recorded on DVD media.

See: http://www.CyberLink.com for information about 'PowerDVD' software.

DVD burner drawer will not open every time the button is pressed. When it does open a disk must be in the tray in order to get it to open again.

Most PC DVD/CD drives have a small hole just large enough to insert an unfolded paper clip this will release the rack and pinion drive the the tray will open for you

My CD rom drive won't eject the cd on my Dell Studio Laptop. I press the eject button on the comp, and the click eject on the cd screen, and it makes a noise but nothing comes out.

You may have a cd jammed in your drive. Switch the computer off and on the front of the CD rom drive is a small hole, if you push a straightened paper clip quite hard into this hole it will open the drawer.

Sony DDU1615 has been updated in Driver Detective but other software says different. Why is this so? Have i wasted my money or are driver detective lyibg to me!!!

driver detective is a scam, it might find a few good items, but you can always get the latest drivers free from your product manufacturer's web site. drivers for older and no loger supported devices are almost always available for free at download.com.

on the back of each device their should be a jumper on the right side next to where the ribbon cable plugs in. Remove the jumpers and replace them into the slot thats for "Cable Select" Their should be a picture on the top of the device if they aren't labeled. You can also put the jumper for 1 as "Master" and the other as "Slave"

Sony DVD RW DW-31A stopped writing and not recognising CD in tray

are u copying the disc on the fly i mean directly from dvd rom to dvd rw it sometimes generate this error when reading drive stops giving data due to some error and suddenly bcoz of that the writing drive leavve the session un closed and give an error the solution is first copy ur disc on the hard drive and then copy it on another disc on the fly copying is not safe otherwise also try this

pls try to clean the lens of the drive as follows

due to dusty environment and excessive use lens gets dusty and then have problems in reading or writing dvd 's and cd's

open the dvd tray u can see that shiny eye like thing try cleaning th lens gently in round movement with a tissue paper or very soft cloth used to clean lcd screens or cotton bud good quality see if it works , other wise ur DVD drive lens got weak from use now adays service centers are getting tons of them everyday for replacements

u can try that software thing as well but i dont think it will solve ur problem

pls do rate me FIXYA if i fixed what u wanted

Dvd cd rom not reading anything on my Dell computer

Having to use a paper clip instead of the eject button working could indicate a power source problem. Not reading anything on the drive could be either power source, connection cable or motherboard. I would start by removing the drive and checking all connections. You did not state if this is a laptop or desktop. If it is a desktop, there should be several unused power connections. If you do not have the ability to check the used connection, just switch to a different one. Also check the connection cable to the motherboard and if possible change or replace that. If all this fails, I would assume from a distance that the DVD drive is defective and try to replace it.
