Your laptop should have a built in network card and 10baseT network port, if your laptop does not have a built in network card you can use either a PCMCIA network card or a USB network adapter. Your desktop computer may not have a network card, you will need to purchase a network card and install the drivers.
To connect the two computers together you only need a cross over cable. If you use a hub you can connect two or more computers together using standard 10baseT network cables.

    Hi Vanessa,

Your laptop model has an Integrated Network Card

    Data Link
. The network cable (a 10baseT cable) will plug into a socket on the side or the back of your laptop (this socket looks like a telephone socket but slightly larger). Your laptop also has a Integrated modem, and is one way you can connect to the the Internet, though it is slower than by DSL or cable,

You will not need a USB network adapter for the laptop.

As I said before you may need a network card for your desktop computer.

Since you are new to computing you will need assistance in setting up and purchasing components for your home network.

I can go into details of what you need but as a beginner it will not mean much to you, I suggest you get a computer savy friend to help you.

Good luck to you and a Happy New Year

I have compaq c700 laptop, i connect usb network modem ,only i am able to connect voip only, but when i open the browser(internet explore, chrome etc) page it was not connected

Im not sure what kinda modem you have ..but I think if you connect it via usb you need to install the driver for it ...so ..if you have a driver cd ..run it and make it be seen by the computer ..Usually the modem can run without driver but only on the network port in the network card ..This explains why the phone works and not the internet connection itself..Either use it in the Lan card port ..and make the settings you need for the network ...by log into it using it's IP address in the browser ...or install the driver and try to connect it by usb ..

I have problems with my desktop and was going to use my old Comapq Presario until I can get the desk top fixed. How can I hook that old laptop up to the internet. All I see are dial-up options

you will likely need to add an ethernet interface / network card. If you have a spare USB port, then use a USB Network adapter. If not, then you will need to use a PCMCIA (aka PC Card) network adapter.

Hi there please help me out here, i have got a new pc prob 4 mnths old now but it there isnt no wireless on it, can yu please tell me what i have to do as i have bougt laptops for my kids bout the router...

To my knowledge, this laptop does not have an in-build wireless card. You will need to purchase a wireless USB adaptor such as pixel-clr.gif Netgear WPN111 or a D-Link WUA-1340. You can go into any computer store and ask or a wireless USB adaptor. They're fairly inexpensive ($10 - $50).

Simply load the drivers onto the laptop and plug it in. Scan for your network and connect. The manual that accompanies the USB adaptor will give you all the details you need for this.

Restored factory settings on pc & cant re -instal belkin adaptor

The Belkin site has very specific instructions for installing this adapter in a pc with Vista. These instructions are at: http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D9050&aid=6112&scid=0
I would first unistall any Belkin Software that has already been installed, shut down the system completely and then restart. After you have fully restarted the system then follow the Belkin Site instructions EXACTLY. Any variation is apt to mean an unsuccessful install. Good Luck and have patience.

I would go with card slot adapters, you can find many different ones but I used Dynex 802.11G card even running Win98, I've seen then cheap on sites like eBay. You can use acble and wireless at the same time and with 6MP, you will not notice any speed loss unless you are running live feeds on all 3 computer
