Question about HP Media Center m1180n PC Desktop

1 Answer

Computer will not boot to desktop

At startup, computer goes to windows logo then to blue HP logo, then it resets itself and goes to Safe Mode menu. This process repeats itself and computer will not boot up to desktop.

This is what an online tech with HP told me what we needed to do. I located the battery, but then he lost me on changing the jumper settings, which I couldn't locate on the motherboard.

Well this seems to be an issue with the CMOS battery. We may have to flush the bios settings and that will resolve the issue.

Alfred B : NOw we need to change the jumper settings
Alfred B : This motherboard has a jumper to clear the Real Time Clock (RTC) RAM in
CMOS.
Alfred B : To clear CMOS settings, set jumper CLRTC to pins 2-3.

Alfred B : This motherboard has a jumper to clear the password if you forgot your password.
Alfred B : To clear PASSWORD settings, set jumper CLPWD to pins 1-2.

Alfred B : Jumper is a small cap like item.
Todd Eliason : I'm confused. do you have a link to a visualize what you are saying?
Alfred B : I apologize we do not have a link for that.
Todd Eliason : Hmmm.
Alfred B : Take your time. It is located almost towards the corner of the motherboard, close to the battery.
Todd Eliason : thanks
Alfred B : In order to clear the password, we need to change the jumper settings. Ideally it is located very close the battery.
Todd Eliason : I'm not seeing anything like you are describing, so could you tell me the next few steps once I do find how to change the jumper settings, it may take a lot of time that I don't have right now.
Alfred B : To clear CMOS settings, set jumper CLRTC to pins 2-3.

Alfred B : To clear PASSWORD settings, set jumper CLPWD to pins 1-2.

Alfred B : Take your time, no problem. Get back to us incase you face any issues.
Alfred B : After that, turn on the pc (without the battery), turn if off after 10-20 sec, place back the battery. Turn on>>F1>>goes to CMOS bios utility. F5>>yes to load defaults
Alfred B : F10>>to save and exit. Computer restarts, keep tapping on F8>>last know good configuration
Alfred B : I am confident that these steps will resolve the issue.

I) u said that your computer is going to safe mode menu, if it is really goes to safe mode, then try to click the safe mode option and see whether ur able to go onto the screen or desktop

       (or)

let us even reseting jumper that ur agent or customer rep told, if you can dismantle your computer on your motherboard u will have CMOSbattery(which is slilver , circualar, i think u knowit) , just remove it by screw driver gently and waitfor few 5 minutes and replace and close the tower....... and there is no need of resetting your jumper after doing(removing CMOS battery)

ii) if you are unable to go the desktop by clicking safemode, then there defenitely a problem with your OS or operating sytem

i would suggest u reload your OS or format ursystem or reload Windows XP or Windows Vista Freshly
by tapping F11(incase of Vista) or F10(in case of XP) continously from the moment u power on ur system

here we are trying to bring ur system back to your factory settings(getting the system back to day u got ur system)

but there is problem that u will loose all the data that is present on system(risk at ur own will), i.e., what every that is present in My Documents.....

when you do this recovery(by pressing F11 or F10) you will get an option to peform NDR and DR in order to save datain my documents(NDR: non destructive recovery, DR  : Destructive Recovery...)
select NDR to save data in my documents.... only in case of XP

Thanking you

HP I let the HP asst. Install a bios update and the install is stuck at 40%. What can I do to get out of the update? HP Probook 4530s

Turn on the computer and begin hitting the "F8" key when you see the BIOS screen.

This will take you to the Safe Mode menu.

Use the arrow keys to highlight "Safe Mode," then hit "Enter" on your keyboard.

This will boot your computer in Safe Mode, a minimalist manner of operating Windows that runs only essential Windows files.

If using Windows XP in Safe Mode, click the "Start" button and then click "Run." In the box that pops up, type "msconfig" and hit "Enter."

If using Windows Vista or Windows 7, click the Windows logo in the bottom left corner of the screen, type "msconfig" in the search field and then hit "Enter."

This will open the System Configuration Utility.

In the System Configuration Utility box, click the "Services" tab, check the box that reads, "Hide All Microsoft Services," click "Disable All" and then click "Apply."

In the System Configuration Utility box, click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and then click "Apply." Next, click the "Close" box.

A box will pop up that prompts you to restart your computer.

Select "Restart" and let the computer restart itself, allowing it to boot to Windows normally.

If the computer still stalls when trying to boot to Windows, restart the computer and boot to Safe Mode again.

Run your antivirus program in Safe Mode, deleting any files that are flagged as viruses, spyware or malware. Restart the computer and boot to Windows normally

hope this helps

Unable to get passed the startup screen (HP logo screen). normal power down last night. Disconnected all USB peripherals still without success.

AS YOU ON THE SYSTEM AND EVEN BEFORE WINDOWS STARTS KEEP PRESSING THE F8 KEY CONTINUEOUSLY. A MENU WILL APPEAR. SELECT SAFE MODE AND ENTER. WINDOWS WILL LOAD IN SAFE MODE. THIS WILL SOLVE SOME OF YOUR PROBLEMS. NOW RESTART THE SYSTEM IN NORMAL MODE.

IF THIS DOES NOT WORK SELECT "LOAD WINDOWS WITH LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION " AND THEN RESTART. THIS WILL SURELY SORT OUT YOUR PROBLEM.

PLS REPLY OR COMMENT. THANKS

AFTER THE WINDOWS LOGO COMES UP AND I ENTER PASSWORD DESKTOP STARTUP DOES NOT COME UP. ONLY BLANK SCREEN

Very first thing to try is to see if it boots in safe mode. Start the computer, immediately start tapping F8. You'll eventually get a menu - pick "Start in safe mode." When Windows comes up, log in and see if it goes all the way to the desktop - it will likely look a bit strange, and will give a warning that you're running in Safe Mode.

If the desktop comes up, you've got a program or driver that's interfering. If it doesn't... Windows is quite likely borked and will need to be reinstalled.

Blue Screen

When the computer first boots up, press the F8 key when the eMachines logo is replaced by the first Microsoft screen, then select Safe Mode from the list. If the computer will not boot in Safe Mode, you will need to boot from your Windows CD and select the repair installation option. If you can boot in Safe Mode, you will need to find out what is causing the system to reboot during startup. With the msconfig utility, disable all unnecessary startup programs and services, then try restarting the computer normally. If this works, you need to use the msconfig utility to add the startup programs and services back one-by-one until it fails to boot again (to locate your troublemaker). Keep repeating this until all services and programs (except the one causing the problem) are back in the lineup.

Windows xp logo will start to load then......

To solve this will require more information from you. The Blue screen is Windows way of telling you that it has a driver issue with a basic component, usually your video card. Did you recently make any hardware changes? If so please let me know what was changed.

When windows first boots, you can repeatedly press the F8 key until you see a menu giving you choices of windows booting. You need to select Safe Mode. Safe mode should allow you to at least boot without a blue screen. The blue screen could also be cause by a virus or other software.

Microsoft has a description of Safe mode here;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222
but here is a quick snippet
To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
  1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
  2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.
