Usually if you hit Channel Down on the front of the Set, once you hit the bottom channel (2) the TV will cycle through the AV in's, and then to the top Channel.

We just got a used mitshubishi projection tv, model WD-65831 without a remote. It says all over it that it is 1080P but it's in 720. How do I change this without a remote?

You can't do this without a remote control.
If you wish to buy its original remote control, contact the authorized service centre, or authorized dealer to your device brand. They can either give you a genuine remote control to your device, or can direct you, from where can you purchase a suitable one.
To select a proper universal remote control, you should know about the number of digits to its set-up codes. There are 3 digit, 4 digit, 5 digit, 2 digit and even single digit codes, to some brand devices. After confirming this, check the sites linked here. Both the sites have set-up code list and set-up procedure to many popular brand remote controls. Check which brand remote control has set-up code/s to your device brand, and buy that one according to availability? Brand name of the remote control isn't a matter, but it should have set-up codes in its code list, to the device brand you have.
Please note: Every new universal remote control will have set-up code list, and set-up procedure along with its pack. Never accept a remote control, that hasn't both of this. For more details about the set-up codes, visit the site http://electrohelponline.blogspot.com/ Check this site too. http://remotesearch.blogspot.com/ Universal remote controls are available at most of the electronic spare part selling shops.

No I am very Sorry you cannot change any picture settings without the original remote for many of manufacturers of TV sets a lot of sets you cannot even change channels or volume on quite a few also. the only thing I can recommend for that is go to search on this page and search for remote controllers you should be able to find one at a few of them here on this website!!

How do I change the tv/video without the controller? Is there a manual switch? Why do I need a controller or remote for everything? What if it breaks- can I not use my TV?

You had best get a learning remote (some as cheap as $10 to $20) and program it to do the input and/or TV/video selection. This would be your backup. There is no switch for many of the options on many of today's TVs. There may be a menu button to get to a lot of them. The alternative is to get a second remote while they are still made for your set, but the TV makers charge too much for them. A third choice is a more sophisticated remote that can be downloaded from a computer but they run $100 on sale to over $200. The people that have them have all their controls on one remote. I prefer the arm of the couch for 2 Dish controls, the TV control, and sometimes the DVD/audio system and the DVD+R recorder. The last gets no usage with hard-drive recording from my DVRs. -Ken

I lost remote is there away to manually change tv black panels back to full screen like the aspect button without a remote? the tv is a hitachi 51f500

Unfortunately, most of these projection TV's require a remote. You CAN purchase an aftermarket remote. I would look for one that has all the features you need, PIP, screen format etc.... I have found that the Sony RM-VL600 works real well with my Mitsubishi TV... kids thrashed the remotes more than once...
This particular unit has system control PROGRAMABLE buttons on the bottom row. I've been able to program them for formatting the screen, setting audio and video... Solved my issue of needing a factory remote... KEN

Lost the controller for Pioneer rear projection TV

Try pressing the "Input" button the front of the set. That should allow you to change between the different inputs. The return button usually returns you to the previous channel you were watching - don't think it works for the input though. Also, depending on the model of the set you have, try downloading the PDF user or owners manual - it will tell you how to use the remote.

Screen cut off on the bottom - WT-42313 Mits 42"

Make sure your remote is the official Mit remote, and that it is set for TV, usually the far left setting at the top of the remote.

These remotes control many different devices. Some will allow video to work without allowing audio to work.

TV will allow all to work.
