I am trying to instal a Netgear router and I am not able to get the router to find an internet connection. I cycled the cable modem and computer before trying the instalation, this did not help. I am wondering how much I can increase the memory in this model computer?

Re: Wireless router cannot find internet
Well the memory issue and the inabilty to "net" connect are not "connected" to each other.
In order to answer the memory question I need your exact model #
As for the internet .. be sure your are connected first properly at the cable modem. Then from the modem to the router you should have a CAT5 cable. Then from the router to a PC so that you can configure the router and setup the wireless properties

I would go and get an external USB wireless device. They are great for picking up wireless connections you can get them cheap at amazon.com under wireless USB. I'm assuming that your E machine does not have a wireless port installed. Also you can get a PCI wireless card as well. The link above will take you to what you will need to do this. John
The netgear router installation will set up the internet connection during install. Download the Router driver from netgears website and install on the computer/s then your up and running. it appears you wireless card is seeing the router so just install the drivers and your set.
try the website manufacturer of your wireless router, dlink, linksys, netgear... they the ones you want to speak to... also.. if you just purchased the router.. installation instructions are usually ready to walk you through the setup process from beginning to end if you have not try those..
my suggestion is for you to have the computer directly connected to the wireless router and make sure your internet is working there... then give him a call.. they will let you know how to set up the wireless connection but you may want to make sure you can access the router from your computer and it would be easier just to have it connected direclty to the computer first, then after is configured you can try to stablish a connection wirelessly...
on your computer try to reinstall the device driver for wireless. try to connect the ethernet cable directly to the computer. if you have internet access, then most likely your netgear router needs to be reconfigured. you need to contact your internet service provider or router manufacturer for the reconfiguration of your router. mostly likely the security settings of the router needs to be changed.
wireless hasnt got nothing in relation to the wired internet ports on your computer. think of it as two seperate books.
if you have brought a wireless router, you SHOULD have brought a wireless card to go inside your computer, just like you need a skybox to watch t.v from the satelite, it doesnt go straight to your tv. just like the wireless signals doesnt get 'absorbed' by your pc.
IF you have also brought, inserted, and installed the wireless card you should follow these steps.
firstly you need to go into 'network connections' and find your wireless connection you have. double click it and you should see a screen where you search for your wireless network, which the netgear wireless router will be sending out the signal. Once youve found your wireless network you can double click it and connect. some people will have a password, called a network key. this should be provided in the paperwork of the netgear wireless router.
did you set up your wireless connection using a wired internet connection. i have a netgear wireless system and tried to set it up without being 'wired' but you can not do it that way. you have to be connected to set it up, then you can configure it, and after that it should be ok. i actually went back to a 'wired' connection cos the netgear was very unreliable
First thing I did with my Netgear is this.
Plug in the dsl/cable modem to the PC directly. Then install the driver on the cd. If you are one of the unlucky types like I was, the router didn't come with a cd. Try going to Netgers page see if they have a driver. Most are basically auto install. Try this before you check the netgear site though. Plug in the cable/dsl modem to the router and the pc to the router. Resstart everything. This includes the modem, router and pc. When it pops back up, try seeing if that works. if not, try opening up Internet explorer. Type this in to the url. 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0
That should bring up the netgear setup page for the router. If it ask for a password, the password on mine was
username - admin
password - password
It has an auto configure tab so click on that and that should automatically take care of everything for you. Let me know what happens!
