Question about Toshiba Satellite A105 Notebook

5 Answers

Desktop icons are randomly highlighted without any control.

When the desktop screen appears, icons on the screen are rapidly highlighted, one followed immediately by another. If I click on the one I want while this is happening, I just get a copy of an already present icon added to the desktop. When I go to turn off the computer, it will not shut off as requested, but will go to standby mode only. Perhaps unrelated, a few days ago, when I pressed the d key, it would display ds on the screen. When I held down the d key, I got a series of s's on the screen which I could not stop. Today, when I pressed the g key, I got a series of s's as well. I've already ordered a new keyboard, but this new problem (described above) probably indicates a bigger problem. Please help.

Can't I reset Windows without having to buy Norton Ghost for what, hepefully, is only a one-time problem? Also, I was able to do whole system Norton virus scan and only one "event" showed up and was taken care of. Could another virus have gone undetected? I had just done a virus update right before the scan.

When you turn on the computer, there will be a screen that will prompt you to press F12 to go to system restore. Press this when prompted to bring you to the menu. You can restore your computer to an earlier date when it was working, or restore the computer to its factiry condition.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, your described concern is indicative of a defective keyboard. Some of the keys are randomly making contacts and therefore simulates being pressed. In addition to that, the "matrix" the defines each key is messed (probably a faulty or several of the circuit trace in the flat ribbon cable). The corrective solution is to replace the entire keyboard assembly.

Alternately, a temporary workaround - you can open the top of the laptop and simply remove the keyboard connection to the motherboard thereby fully disabling it. Connect an external keyboard and should make the laptop functional, though a bit cumbersome if you have to carry the external keyboard.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.

Sounds like you got a virus, or trojen in your windows, assuming you are using windows. Go to, Grisoft.com and get either a trial version of their Pro version 8. Or a free version that is also very good, I have used and installed, just about every virus program ,and like the AVG, I know that *** has been able to handle the latest varients that have come out the last few weeks, so run it in safe mode and you should remove whatever that is "there are so many" and I would also try a copy of Spybot, search and destroy, also freee from their donation based site, Spybot.2008Search-Destroy.com. That should take care of your problem, if you still have the problem then it's the keypad, but I wouldn't open the package so fast. good luck,Gym

This is a key board problem. After you replace the keyboard everything should work fine.

Ifyou want to shut down hold the on button down until it shuts off. Then remove the battery until after you replace the keyboard. Good luck. Please rate me so I know if I solved your problem. Thanks.

It does not sound like a virus but, a keyboard problem. Had the same thing happen on my Toshiba.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!,

You might want to backup your files and Ghost it using Norton Ghost!

It will reset Windows to its Factory settings and un-jumble what has happened along with deleting any viruses you may have!

Hope this is your answer --P3NGYJ03

Norton Antivirus is a Weak antivirus which only detects the Biggest viruses. Malwarebytes Anti-malware is a strong anti-malware and Antivir Free is a good antivirus as well.

How do i delete things of my computer screen icons & apps

to delete the program you want to go to control panel and either add & remove programs or programs & features depending on operating system. If they are just shortcuts on the desktop and you still want the program you can highlight it and either right click and choose delete or highlight it and press shift & delete and choose yes.

Wide screen

Change your display resolution. Go into the Control Panel and look for Desktop or Appearance and Personalization. Open the desktop then click the Settings Tab. Adjust the screen resolution. The higher the resolution the smaller the icons the more that will be displayed.
