Okay, I did something none to smart. I had a paper jam so I pulled out the offending paper back towards the front (toward me) instead of pulling on it from the back. Now it won't feed at all instead it makes a noise like it's trying to pick up the paper but after several try's it just gives up and the error light comes on. according to the self test page it says the printer has a "paper jam" inside. I've disassembled it but there is no paper inside.

Re: Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer Paper jam
Most likely something has broken in the loading gear. Never pull paper against the normal flow, of course, you know that now. Unless you can locate the broken part and replace it, I'm afraid there's not much you can do other than manually feed the paper.

The paper light flashing because there is some paper inside the printer. Open the front cover and remove the cartridge and look inside for the jammed paper. Remove the jammed paper and insert the cartridge , closed the front cover and switch on the printer.
It will help you to solve the problem.
You will have to open the Printer door and pull the paper out if you are lucky it will pull out in one piece if not you will have to get all the pieces out before it will operate again. When pulling out go very easy with it and move your fingers down with the paper to apply force at the closest point to where the paper pulls into printer.
Hi, Sounds like a paper jam. There's a flap at the back of the printer-once open you should be able to see if the paper is stuck there. (Exactly the problem I had yesterday-I didn't spot it at first and it nearly drove me mad! :) Good luck, Raf
Sounds like the fuser is causing the jam. Anything from a dislocated pic finger to other paper debry can be causing these types of jams.
If you open the back door, will the page exit the printer fine of does it still jam?
If it still jams the fuser is definatly the problem. If it dosen't, then it might be the delivery assembly causing the jam.
You might be able to see where the jam is happening if you print something and watch it though the back to see where the paper catches and jams.
try opening the top cover and removed residual piece of paper, do not overturn coz this will damaged your mechanism, pull the paper in the paper direction w/c is upwards, in some cases, you can still managed to pull it up towards you but not too much force ensure you took all piece otherwise this will cause some trouble
