Yes, S3 is the comm wire and it needs to be connected.
S1 Is Active
S2 Is Nuetral
S3 Is your talking wire if that makes any sense

How to troubleshoot thermostat wiring?


I'm not sure if the thermostat is wired correctly. First, the thermostat is wired directly to the outdoor unit (compressor/condenser unit). It is NOT directly connected to the indoor unit. It connects to a low voltage control panel in the outdoor unit that sends a signal to your indoor fan/evaporator. This wire is called the fan relay switch and physically runs between the low voltage controls of the indoor and outdoor units. If the fan relay is bad it's possible that the unit runs continuously. To prevent destroying your outdoor unit there is a safety feature that prevents the indoor fan from shutting down while the outdoor unit is running. If the indoor fan did shut down while the outdoor unit was running than you would slug your compressor. That is, your compressor normally sees refrigerant gas but is instead seeing refrigerant liquid. That would not be good since this scenario would destroy your compressor. It sounds like a faulty fan relay. The actual contactor portion of the relay is in the outdoor unit.

Where to connect blue wire on a 16 seer Westinghouse condenser unit. It has 3 low voltage wires a black a yellow and a blue.


If you have 3 wires hooked up to the indoor unit, you need to read the terminals to which they
are hooked to. On the outdoor unit you need to see on the electrical print where the low voltage
wires should go. However it is uncommon to have three wires, 2 wires is common..

For instance, on the furnace if Black is connected to Y terminal then black at the condenser
would go to one side of the contactor. If Yellow is hooked to C terminal at furnace, the
at outdoor unit Yellow wire would go to other side of contactor. If Blue is not Hooked to
anything, tape it off.

Indoor unit freezes up, turn the mode button to the fan only to thaw out the indoor unit but the outdoor unit runs, What should I look for?


If the outdoor unit is not shutting off, your indoor coil will freeze up when the thermostat "satisfies" and shuts off the blower. The most common cause of a non-stop outdoor unit is the contactor. This part is usually black or brown in color. The line voltage wires that come from the service disconnect to the outdoor unit hook up directly to this contactor. If you shut all the power off (circuit breakers), the outdoor unit will shut off. You might be able to tap on the contactor to "free" it. This might allow the unit to work for a little while, but 99 times out of 100, once the contactor starts sticking, it will continue to stick. Replace the Contactor. Extra precaution needs to be taken as there are two seperate voltage sources......240 volts from your circuit breaker box and 24 volts from the air handler. You should use a voltage tester prior to performing any electrical work.

No problem have done this many times. R from the t-stat goes to R on the indoor unit. G goes to G Y goes to Y and C goes to C if you have a C or the t-stat the you are using. If there is no C there dont worry about it. It only need to be hookup if the t-stat uses power from the unit to run. Many t-stats today use battery power and do not need the C wire hooked up. Now R and C from the outdoor unit. R goes to the Y on the indoor unit and C goes to C on the indoor unit. That means that you may have two wires under the Y terminal and sometimes under the C terminal on the indoor unit. If on the outdoor unit there is no designation of R and C dont worry, just hook one wire to each of the two wires there for your low voltage connection. It does not matter which one goes to which unless they are marked then it may matter.
This should get you up and running and see it really isn't that hard!! :-)

We wired a split system ac unit. after a year the ac contractor said we had a wire between the outdoor unit and the indoor unit reversed and it ran all the time. could that have happened? could that haved...


It's possible. On the air handler the red post on the circuit board always has voltage and should go to the thermostat. If for some reason it was hooked to one of the wires to the condensor it would have ran all the time.

Airforce 12000BTU Air Conditioner wiring problem


The outdoor unit should have 2 small wires connected to the contactor coil. This delivers the 24v "Signal" to energize the coil. The wire from the t'stat for cooling are usually yellow, in almost every case. When you put the t'stat in the cooling mode and set the temp lower than the room temp, the indoor and outdoor unit should come on. Check for voltage on the terminal block for 24 volts accross the yellow and common wire. Common could be ground on some handlers. If you have the 24 volts, then check for 24v on the 2 small wires (usually 18 to 22 gage wire) on the contactor coil. If no voltage, trace the 2 wires back to the indoor unit and see where they go. If they are the ones that are not attached, put one on the yellow wire terminal and the other on the common terminal. This will send power to the indoor unit and then piggyback to the outdoor unit. Do not remove the yellow and common from the terminal block. Don't be too concerned about the colors from the outdoor coil wires. Just make sure they are hooked up right.
