Question about AT&T High Speed DSL Modem

I have an AT&T Modem; having trouble with internet connectivity

I have an AT&T High Speed DSL Modem and am having trouble internet connectivity. Every now and then, the internet connection is lost. It says to check to make sure all ethernet and phone jack wires are connected, and they are. Then, I have to put in a username and password to reconnect. Why is my computer disconnecting the internet and is it okay to keep putting in this username/password?

Have exactly the same problem as you are experiencing. No rhyme or reason for the constant disconnects. Most of the time it re-connects on it's own Tech support said it was a password issue and gave me a new one. Worked o.k. for one day and then back to the same old sudden disconnect thing. I have the Motorola DSL High Speed Modem with the five green lights. Google search reveals many subscribers with the 'same problem' in all different parts of the country. My guess is AT&T does not have a fix; or even know what the problem is??? Sure is frustrating for what we pay each month for this thing!

AT&T sold up a 3 mb connection over the phone but when the tech came out to the house he explained the same issue of being too far away from the local office, so he said he would try out the 1.5 connection but if it didn't work out right we would have to go down to 1 mb. this seems to be the cause of the problem and i highly doubt if ATT is going to do anything more to help out its users as comcast offers slighly poorer service for about the same costs in san francisco. GIVE ME FIOS PLZ.

After a recent DSL speed upgrade, I experienced dropped DSL connections along with some DSL authentication failures when trying to connect. Today an AT&T technician tested my line and found that my service (speed) level was too high, meaning that I am too far from the "central office" for the higher speeds, even though I am smack in the middle of San Francisco. He insisted that I would have more reliable service if I downgraded. He said that the AT&T staff who take DSL service orders do not have the tools to determine if an address is too far from the "central office" for the level of service requested. (This amazed me.) So I second the suggestion that the DSL connection be tested by a technician.

It is OK to keep putting the UN and PW in. However you shouldn't have to. I suggest having a tech come to your home and have them do a signal test both at your jack and outside with your home unplugged from your service box. If there is a big difference in the numbers then you're simply loosing signal due to signal bleed inside. This is a simple fix. Have them isolate some wires in your jack and place a DSL filter outside. Then your DSL signal will go straight to your modem and not bounce all over your home. This will NOT affect your phone.

I would call your Internet Service Provider tech support for your DSL and try to solve the issue. It may not be the hardware issue.

The power light stays red and does not pick up the DSL line. Then after a short while the modem shuts off without it being unplugged from the outlet.

Telephone your local ISP (Internet Service Provider). If they provided the DSL modem to you, they can trouble-shoot your problem, and, if necessary, ship you a replacement modem. If they cannot help you, it is time for you to find a different ISP that _can_ help you.

The dsl light on my modem isn't lighting up?

The dsl light is physical connection to the internet. If your dsl is a line share with dial tone and it sounds clear with no humm or static, your lines are most likely in good working order. So you may start with the telco tech support or better yet borrow a friends working modem and see if you get dsl at your place. This will tell if a dsl signal is making it to your jack. If it is then your modem is toast. If no dsl with a known good modem the issue is with you isp/telco. Most telcos charge a $60.00 isolation fee if the dsl signal is good to your home/business. So a little work on your part can save some cash.

My Motorola Modem Mstatea

When the DSL light turns red it indicates that the modem has no internet signal.
So please check if the cables are connected properly
Also ensure that there is a proper signal to your premises without any interference
This is called intermittent connection
If the DSL light turns red it indicates that there is a problem with the cables connected or the DSL line
Please check your DSL connection with ISP

There is on another reason that the modem might have gone bad.
If all the above steps are executed and if this issue still persists replace the modem

I can't get on the internet

>> do i have to call my internet service provider to activate my modem?

Yes.

Each modem has a unique "address", and your I.S.P. uses that address to authorize each DSL-modem that tries to connect to their network.

Or, if the two of you live in the same house/apartment, you should just buy a "router". Then, both computers can connect to the router, and the router connects to the DSL modem, and both of you can "share" the monthly fee for the _one_ Internet connection.

Yes i want to find out if a cable modem will work with your dsl phone internet service?

No.

A cable-modem connects with a coax-cable to the cable-company's network, but a DSL-modem connects with telephone-cable to the telephone-company's network.
