Question about AT&T High Speed DSL Modem
I have an AT&T High Speed DSL Modem and am having trouble internet connectivity. Every now and then, the internet connection is lost. It says to check to make sure all ethernet and phone jack wires are connected, and they are. Then, I have to put in a username and password to reconnect. Why is my computer disconnecting the internet and is it okay to keep putting in this username/password?
After a recent DSL speed upgrade, I experienced dropped DSL connections along with some DSL authentication failures when trying to connect. Today an AT&T technician tested my line and found that my service (speed) level was too high, meaning that I am too far from the "central office" for the higher speeds, even though I am smack in the middle of San Francisco. He insisted that I would have more reliable service if I downgraded. He said that the AT&T staff who take DSL service orders do not have the tools to determine if an address is too far from the "central office" for the level of service requested. (This amazed me.) So I second the suggestion that the DSL connection be tested by a technician.

It is OK to keep putting the UN and PW in. However you shouldn't have to. I suggest having a tech come to your home and have them do a signal test both at your jack and outside with your home unplugged from your service box. If there is a big difference in the numbers then you're simply loosing signal due to signal bleed inside. This is a simple fix. Have them isolate some wires in your jack and place a DSL filter outside. Then your DSL signal will go straight to your modem and not bounce all over your home. This will NOT affect your phone.
