Ok so i called 1-866-sandisk and she told me how to fix it. you just
flip the key lock at the top so you see orange, then hold down the
record button. then you should get some sort of message on the screen.
then you plug it in and under my computer
a file should show up. you open it and make a folder in it called
sansa.fwm (i think thats the right folder name, if not, try sansa.tmp
or email me). then you unplug it and it should say formatting or something like that. once its done it should work.

I had the "Refresh Database" problem with my C250, it just sat there after turning it on! However, the GOOD NEWS is, I corrected it! First I connected it to my PC, then FORMATTED the unit. This gave me an empty player that at least would turn on. Then I downloaded the Sansa "Updater" from the SanDisk website. After setting up the updater software, I connected the C250. It automatically checked for any new firmware, and loaded it into the player. After that I restarted the C250 and it again came up OK without any music loaded. The last thing I did was to load only 1.8 GB worth of music files. My take on the problem is that if you overload the memory, or interupt a file while loading, then the "datbase" function never gets done. I've had mine running for about a week now without problems! Go under settings and change USB Mode to other choice. Then format. After formatting change back to original setting. I had same prob. Tech support told me to do this and it worked. Have had no problem since.
Go ahead and do this, in case the DB is corrupted:
Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. 'well firstly drain the battery and then connect it to charge it up a bit. once it has been there for 5min or so take it off and then turn it on>settings>USB Mode>MSC
once you have done that connect it up and it should work/recognise the player.

okay, heres wut u can try. try to switch the USB mode from MTP to MSC (in settings, go to USB Mode and switch from MTP to MSC.) And then in the MSC mode connect it to the PC. I dunno bout ur sansa, but my did a Database Reboot, and the computor could see the player. Then u can switch it back to the MTP mode (czu its much mroe comfortable). Although i think the 0.5 gigs are lost forever (i lost 1.5 gigs,)atleast now u can dwonlaod songs on ur player.
