Scanning docs & size of pdf files on Mac w/HP l7680 All-in-one

When I scan multiple documents using my Mac computer and HP L7680 All In One printer/scanner, my file saves as a very large file 5.4MB. It's too large to attach and send as an email. One page when scanned saves as the size of 580kb or so. Documents are scanned as PDF and 200 resolution and gray-scaled.  How do you make the files smaller?

The scanner produces a "picture" of the document, much as if you laid it flat on a table and took a picture of it with your digital camera. If you did this, your .jpg from the camera would be several hundred K at a minimum - comparable to the file size off the scanner. That's why the file is so big, it contains a picture and not text data - even though it's still a .jpg file.
If you reduce the scan resolution you will save space, but at the expense of legibility of the document image. To get it down to the smallest possible size, you will need to run the scanned image through OCR ( Optical Character Recognition ) into a Word document for example, and then print it out to a .pdf file. If you have a clean source document with few graphics this isn't as difficult as it may seem. Microsoft Office has an excellent OCR process known as Document Imaging. You need to carefully proof read the result but with a clean input Document Imaging is amazingly accurate in Office 2007.
In short, there is no easy solution to your problem.

HP L7680 prints fine but during scanning process it starts the scan but after light bar gets to end then it locks up and must restart the printer

Hi there!
To check if the issue is with the hardware part of the printer try to make a copy of the same document. if it fail to copy the document it can be with the document or with the scanning mechanism of the printer.
If you are using the Automatic Document Feeder, make sure that the document is flat because the sensor is sensitive to crumples or folds, try another document to isolate the problem.
If you are scanning using the flatbed glass make sure that the setting is set to the correct paper size that you are using.
If after checking all those and you still experience the same issue there is a utility from HP that will recognize where is the issue coming from and it also provide a Fix or a resolution to the problem
You can download the HP Scanner Diagnostic Utility from this site: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=2512009&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us
Just select your Operating System, click Next and select Utility and under it click on HP Scan Diagnostic Utility. Save it on your computer. Once the download is finished click Run and on the utility select your printer model # and click on Diagnose
** To check your exact Operating System click Start> right click on Computer/My Computer click properties**
Hope this helps!

Which HP printer can copy or scan legal size (81/2 X 14) documents?

You will likely need an Officejet model such as this one:

Officejet L7780

Here is another, but more expensive:

Officejet 8500 Premier

And...this one looked pretty reasonable:

Officejet L7680

These were the only ones I found with legal size flatbed scanning/copying.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Scanning Multiple pages into one pdf

Scanning a multi-page document as a .pdf file reverts the settings for rotation, selected area, etc. to default for any pages after the first page. This applies to Mac OSX 10.3, 10.4, & 10.5. A simple, but tedious work-around is to scan each page as a separate file and easily recombine them using OSX Preview. Just open the first page, view the Sidebar, and drag-drop the additional page files into the sidebar. Save and it's all one multi-page .pdf.
