Although it is possible to downgrade to XP, if you have a genuine xp cd and product key, you have to make sure you have XP drivers for all your hardware before you start. Also bear in mind that about £50 of the cost of that machine was for the operating system ...Vista ...so think very carefully before you go ahead and do this.

Ok ... you have the XP CD and a valid product key .... all you need to do is boot from the XP CD and follow the prompts from Windows setup .... when given the options of what to do with the existing partitions choose to delete them and perform a fresh install.

Please bear in mind what I said before about drivers though. Make sure you have XP drivers for all your hardware ....network card being the most important so you can get a working internet connection when you get back to XP.

Yes it is possible, its also possible to keep both at the same time. But you need a windows xp install cd, and valid install key.

If you have both then post back and we can help you out some more.

Yes it is possible to change from WinXP pro to Vista Ultimate, you will need to get a Genuine Vista Product and then follow the instructions, you will need to first remove all the programs or data you need so you can format the Laptop and then its clean and ready for something new. About the WinDVD 9 and other related errors am guessing you never used uninstaller (Recommended Uninstaller), there are programs meant to wipe clean your machine leaving no part behind if you are to uninstall a program, because if its an incomplete uninstall your machine will have problems as the registry will be messed up and corrupted leading to other fatal problems. After such incidences you will need a registry cleaner (Recommended Registry Repair Pro) to clean the mess and enable fixing all the problems you machine is facing because other means would be more technical.

I have a SONY Viao VGN-NR220E laptop with Vista home premium.I was trying to restore the laptop to the factory condition, but after i selected the option to restore to factory defaults, nothing happened...

Hello,
Some of the solutions that you can try are
1 - Boot in Safe Mode....switch on the notebook, press F8 after machine starts.....if you get the options, chose Safe Mode and then once u get into the Desktop panel switch off and switch on again...now let it boot in normal mode.....
2 Else you have to have the option of loading the defaults from the rescue disk in the above process, insert the Resuce disk that you created and start.
3 The final option is to Reformat the Disk and install the WIN XP / Vista OS...the best is install WinXP...to do that insert the WinXP disk and switch on the machine again....follow on screen instructions
Do a partition of your disk, Format and install XP in C: and leave D: or E: to save your critical Data files....

Sorry bud it will not accept any new drivers afet installing Vista. WinXP would have allowed you this freedom, now the best option is t change your sound card which is certified as Vista compatible and insert it onto any PCI slot & Vista will recognize it......sodeep

CQ40-108TU XP DRIVERS

i have found this from another forum hope it will work:
For Installing Vista, some users reported that after resetting the BIOS to default (F9), the VISTA installation running smoothly.

In your bios the information of "non vista os installed" is "the Factory installed OS" for this laptop. Probably, you bought this laptop with freedos OS.

I recommend you to install VISTA for this model, however, some users with their own reasons feel the need of XP as their OS.

Up till now, they end up having a hardware conflict between Audio and modem. Some of them can tolerate it, some still finding for the solution.

Unfortunately, they could NOT ask a help from HP/Compaq since HP/Compaq ONLY support VISTA for Operating System.

A policy that encouraged by Microsoft to FORCE users to migrate to VISTA

Help me to install WinXP in a Gateway Laptop that came with SATA HDD

you have probably already fixed this but maybe others can find this a little helpful. i had to downgrade a gateway ma7 for one of my customers who had lost their recovery cd with vista on it. Their HD had gone bad.

The reason the XP installer says "no HD" is because the the drivers required by the gateways Sata controller (hd controller) are not preloaded on the xp install disc. The only way around this is to download the windows xp compatible sata drivers from gateways website and then slipstream them into a custon windows xp install cd. its actually not as difficult as it sounds. just download the sata driver, a slipstreaming program called nlite.

1 download and install nlite
2 put in your xp install cd, and run nlite, when nlite asks, browse to the i386 folder (your installation files)
3 you will have lots of options to choose from, but for this purpose, choose "add drivers" and select the location of the gateway drivers (c:\cabs\something) i think.
4 finish and burn the cd. then use it to install windows xp.

this little guide isnt step by step, but with a little trial and error you should get by
