Re: Horizontal line May 03, 2007 Toshiba...

Your symptoms suggest that your vertical Ic401 has failed. In your Tv that Ic is a LA78040N-E Toshiba p/n# AE002783. Also it would be wise to test the feeder caps in that circuit, especially anything in the 100uf range.
This is not an expensive repair for a qualified shop. The Ic is under $20.00 dollars and caps are a buck or two - the labor will be your most expensive element of the repair and it shouldn't take an hour start to finish..
Hope this helps!

Samsung TSL2793HF - Slight Right Side Pincushion and Horz Line Bottom to Top Until the TV Warms up

Yes, this is rare but I have seen it before--not fixable if it is what I think it is----It is what is called a Dome effect---the shadow mask in the picture tube is actually contracting and or expanding depending on temperature---

Directly behind the phosphor coating (the stripes that you see on the screen) is a metal screen--the holes or perforations in it line up with the stripes on the phosphor screen.

Some masks either have a material or a defect causing the dome effect----Not likely to be anything else---a Pin amp problem will not usually act the way you describe but a shadow mask inside the picture tube will act exactly that way.

The TV is black but the fuse is good. I was told that it might be the horizontal output transistor. Where is it on that model?

If the fuse is intact in all probability the power supply unit is OK. If your Horizontal Output Transistor fails you will hear a high pitch whistling sound . Any way its the black three legged device mounted on an aluminum heat sink near a transformer from which a Red wire goes to the top of the picture tube.

Picture blacked out with a horizontal line lrft in middle of screen

You could have a bad solder ground almost anywhere. I would suggest the first place to look at be the vertical IC. Resolder this if you see small rings around the IC. You must look very, very close. You may need to replace any capacitor in the immediate area of this IC. Could be three or four capacitors. Then inspect the rest of the power supply board for bad solder grounds. Thanks for asking!

TV shows only about a one inch wide horizontal strip in middle of screen, the rest is black. It actually looks like it is showing what is supposed to be at the very bottom of the screen but is perfectly...

In the old days that meant that your "flyback transformer" went bad and needed to be replaced.

Now a days it might be cheaper to just buy a new TV set - especially if it's over ten years old. Give it to Goodwill and see if one of their workers can fix it for resale to lower income folks..

Thin line horizontally across screen

First of all this set is a CRT based set and thus has what is called a Vertical IC. This is the component that either has failed or has bad connections to the PC board. This is a simple and inexpensive repair. If you are comfortable working inside he set and can solder, you can fix this yourself. First look for the vertical IC. Is will be a small flat IC attached to a heatsink and will be marked TAxxx or LAxxx. Try resoldering the pins first. If that failes to resolve the problem, replace the IC.

If you are not sure whether or not you have the correct IC, post the marking here and I will confirm.

Top of screen is stretched

There are capacitors in the vertical circuit that can cause this problem. You may be able to find these capacitors by using a hair dryer pointed to the suspected bad cap and then when the problem happens you can spry a little cooling spray on it to see if the problem clears up. The vertical output IC could be going bad but this can be checked the same way. if you have no TV solid state repair experience, play it safe and take this set into a local repair depot. Good Luck

My television has sound but no picture. I can not program the television because I can not see the screen menu. I also have tried to change the antennae but this does nothing to the picture's reception.

Do you have any ideas to correct this problem. There is no warranty.
