While playing tape, I get double lines, half picture half blank?

Had mini cassette tape stick in my Handycam... the opening on the tape sprung. I somehow got the pulled tape lined up back in the camcorder but it didn't play correctly . When I tried playing another tape, now while viewing I see bands of alternating picture and blanks. I asked about getting a tape cleaner at best buy/ they said only get a Sony since thats what I have. But will I be wasting money?
