Windows Virtual Memory Minimum is Low

Sometime while working on my pc, I get the following pop-up:

"Windows Virtual Memory Minimum is Low" -- Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied. for more information, see help.

After a short time, the message goes away without any apparent change, until the next time I get the pop-up.

Is this normal? Or, what is the problem?

Desktop is a:
HP Pavilion a620n
AMD Athlon (tn) XP3200+
220 GHz, 448 MB of RAM

System :
Microsoft Windows XP
Hope Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2

Fairly normal occurrence but you should have a look at your performance settings
go to control panel
double click system icon
click the advanced tab at the top
by performance click settings
in pop up window click advanced tab
at the bottom you'll see virtual memory
click change
most common option now is to set the radio button to system managed size
you should then ok each window.....

You may run low on memory when using lots of programs at once. The paging file can be increased in size to increase performance. You may want to buy a card with additional memory (RAM). Take the serial no and model to any PC store and they should be able to supply the right card. Then just install it in the spare slot inside your PC or get them to do it.

You need to increase your virtual memory manually. Do the following
My computer >Right click > Properties > Advance > Performance Setting > Advance / Change
then increase the Number there (eg. 750) then Press SET then OK

Thats all you need to do!

My pc is running low on virtual memory when i use the internet

In general, you want to set your minimum virtual memory to about 3 times the total amount of memory installed in the machine.(3072MB for each gig of ram) The maximum should be 4096 more than the minimum setting.
To check this, right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Click on the "Advanced" tab and click the "Settings" button in the "Performance" section. On the "Performance Options" panel, click the "Advanced" tab. The virtual memory button is at the bottom (on xp machines). Selcect "custom" and then set the values according to how much ram you have in the machine. For more, check here.

Go back into the virtual memory settings, change the settings using the custom size adjustment.
Change the initial size to 650 and the maximum size to 1200, make sure nothig else is checked and click set and then ok and exit out of all windows and reboot the mechine. let me know what happens and if the bubble popup disapears. cheers.

Windows XP Virtual Memory is low. How can I regain memory?

Virtual memory is "memory" on your hard drive, not actual memory. The best way to regain this is reboot and shut down some of the stuff that runs automatically when you DO boot up.

(This Virtual memory is space set aside on your hard drive that the processor moves data into and out of like it would put data on a memory module ... but in comparing the two, the virtual memory is SLOW.)

You can increase the size of your virtual memory to anything you want. Some say too large a allocation will slow you down and too little will cause crashing or slow opertion. You are 99.44% probably set to let Windows manage your virtual memory (default) at this time.

I have an IBM thinkpad T20 running windows 2000. The computer is on and booted up but the monitor is not lighting up. It is running on 256mb ram and I was getting a lot of virtual memory is low warnings...

To determine if the laptop has a problem with the inverter of low virtual memory issues, plug an external monitor in to the laptop and you can change the virtual memory by following these instructions, right click on my computer, select properties, then select advanced, click on virtual memory and change the settings to system detemined, save settings and reboot the laptop without the external monitor to see if it is virtual memory or inverter.
Please keep me informed

Vertiual memory

Virtual memory is really hard disk space used as memory.
If you are running low on virtual memory, make sure your hard disk is not nearly full (check in MyComputer). or adjust Virtual Memory settings:

On Windows XP look in
  • Control Panel
  • System, Advanced,
  • Performance,
  • Settings,
  • Advanced,
  • Virtual Memory.(set to a larger number)
I believe it's in a similar location in other versions of Windows.
