My lcd backlight has burned out

The computer boots fine, but the backlight is gone. I've been told I'll have to replace the entire screen - almost as much as the computer. Any suggestions?

There are four options. One is to replace the entire LCD Panel. Not cost effective but probably the easiest. Two is to replace the flourescent tube, but this requires unmounting the panel from the laptop, disassembling it, desoldering and soldering the old/new tubes, reassembly and remounting. The time and hassle is not worth the amount spent on a new LCD (besides, the flourescents are very fragile and break easily, plus they are made with lead so you must wear gloves for the replacement procedure). Three is that you can use an external monitor, so long as you have no reason to move the laptop. Fourth is buy a new machine.

I would probably look on eBay for a known good used panel or even a dead system on the same brand/model which has a good LCD and then change the panel myself. It is not that hard, especially if you find the right service manual.

But how do you know it is the backlight? It might also be a bad inverter. An inverter is about $30 where a new LCD would be $150 or more, and even a used one might run $75. Best to try to find a non-working used system with no video problems, or maybe even a complete replacement top on eBay so you have all the parts you might need.

If the backlight has gone you can replace just the backlight....assuming you start your laptop and you only see a very faint image of your normal windows desktop...this is generally the backlight failure.....you can buy backlights separately and fit them yourself....problem is you have to take apart the screen housing and remove the screen (the backlight is attached to the screen...looks like a minature florescent bulb)...you'll have to remove approximately 8 screws to get the screen out.....its a little tricky and you have to be careful not to damage the screen when tightening screws....I'd suggest taking it to nearest independent PC shop and getting a quote....backlights vary in price and are sized to fit screen size....I've seen some for sale on ebay...that should give you an idea of price...then just add labour..

I have a Vizio VF550XVT1A. The screen started to

Hi Alfred Grace,

First of all, thank you for posting your question here at Fixya.

Based on the symptoms you've described, I don't believe that the backlights are already faulty. If backlights gone to malfunction, that are permanent, but in your case you've said that the TV power up fine for half an hour, this is an indication that the fault not came from the backlights but from the inverter boards. Inverter boards are the one giving high voltage to the backlight to light up, it has a built in protection circuit that will activate once there's a malfunction on the board to avoid further damaged because of high voltage output.
If you would like to fix it yourself, I would advice you to replace both the slave and master inverter board. I saw your board at shopjimmy.com. Click it HERE for the replacement. Replacing these boards are not technical, all you have to do is to unplug the unit overnight to drain any voltages from the power supply board, disconnect all connectors and then put-in the new boards. No soldering required. If just in case that the inverter boards are not the issue (I'm pretty confident that the power supply board is working fine), don't worry, the link I've provided accepted return, the fault is on the power supply board.

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Good luck and take care!

I've seen this problem time and time again. Replacing the inverter fixed it every time. HOWEVER it could always be the CCFL backlight as well. Both fortunately are VERY inexpensive. Changing the inverter is easy but the CCFL will be a little harder. Take your time and remember how to put it all back together and you'll save that $100. I'm sure it's either of those two that's causing the backlight issues. NO NEED to change the entire LCD.

I've seen this problem a few times with laptops my family/co-workers have. If it's like their problem, you should be able to plug in an external monitor and see on the screen. If that works, it's either your LCD screen or your LCD backlight inverter...One of the ways to tell whether it's one or the other is try to shine a bright light directly at the screen. If you can see anything on the screen, it means it's the backlight inverter. If it's still completely black, it's your lcd screen. Both can be replaced fairly easily, just be sure to look really well, because if you purchase the (more expensive) LCD screen, replace it, and still have the problem, you'll need to do the backlight inverter anyway. You can typically find instructions for replacing them online somewhere.

When plugging in the external monitor, wait for a while to see if it will boot to your desktop, then if there's nothing on the screen look at your keyboard. There should be a button on there to swap projection modes (usually have to hit fn+f5). Try hitting that a few times just to be sure. If you still can't see anything on the monitor, it doesn't mean it's not necessarily a software issue. Download/burn a live CD (any linux version will work) and try booting from that to rule out any possible software issues.

I have a Compaq presario CQ61, an when i turn it on the screen is black other than some really dim writing i can hardly see. Help?

Try attaching an external monitor to the laptop & see if you could get any display on it. If this is successful, then you might have either a faulty LCD cable or screen inverter board.
The LCD cable transfers data signal from the motherboard & video card to the LCD screen. It also supplies high voltage DC power to the screen inverter board. The screen inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen. It converts low voltage DC power to high voltage AC power needed for the backlight lamp.

Screen won't appear.computer turnson ok but its screen stays black

Typically, this is caused by the flourescent backlight failing, or the ballast that runs the backlight failing. In these situations, the entire LCD panel is usually replaced, as the ballast is typically matched up to the exact model of LCD panel.

First instinct would tell me that your LCD has gone bad. A refurbished replacement LCD should run around $300-$325 give or take.

Screen goes black after 30 seconds

Yes, this is a backlight problem. However, it could be either the light itself or the inverter that powers the backlight when it fails like this. I'd recommend replacing the entire screen plus housing and hinges (it is often sold as a complete unit) or just replace the inverter (often relatively cheap) and then if that doesn't fix it replace the screen (the backlight is non-replaceably attached to the screen).

The other option is to simply attach it to an external monitor and use it like that. This is also a free way (well, as long as you know someone that has a monitor) to make absolutely sure that the problem is the screen and not anything else.

Plasma, ha, ha. It is a normal high tension generator who is burned out. Plasma is something very different, f.i. a special gas, under high pressure between 2 very thick glasplates. Such a screen weight kilo's! The T705 is a normal LCD screen with 2 backlights each with his own generator.

You my friend have a bad backlight. Inside thes LCD monitors there a little tiny flourecnet lights that help the LCD project the images so that you can see what is being displayed. Sounds like your backlight has gone bad. These can be repaired, but can be costly! These things happen often times, 90% of the time I am replacing the backlights to various monitors. Sorry, but I am certain it is your backlight!

Dell Latitude LCD screen is dark, but computer is still working.

It sounds like the backlight has burned out. The faint light you are seeing is ambient light in your room being reflected through the LCD. Try it in a perfectly dark room and see if you can see anything on the screen. The following page should give you a sense of what is involved in replacing a backlight: http://home.comcast.net/~stonent/screenfix.htm If you aren't comfortable taking things like this apart, I would recommend finding a local repair shop to replace the backlight.
