Did I plug something in wrong? Help!!

The convergence board has a +20V & -20V input. The +20V is OK, but the -20V measures about 4.5V when the cable is disconnected from the convergence board. I could not find any blown fuses but R858...

Replace R858 and R859...They also go bad frequently when the STK chips fail.

For everyone else...

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

There is no picture

CAN YOU SEE ANYTHING ON THE SCREEN? DOES THE MENU FOR THE TV COME ONSCREEN? IS THERE A BLUE SCREEN AT ALL? I HAVE SEEN MANY CONVERGENCE FAILURES WITH THAT MODEL THAT CAN CAUSE THE TV TO NOT POWER ON. IF YOU TAKE THE BACK OFF YOU WILL SEE A BOARD WITH 2 LARGE BLACK CHIPS LABELED STK392-040 IF YOU UNPLUG THE RED CONNECTOR AND THE TV TURNS ON THEN YOU HAVE A CONVERGENCE FAILURE AND THE 2 LARGE BLACK CHIPS WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.

Do the AKAI PTH 5498 TV's have replaceable lamps like you hear so much about for other rear projection TV's? And if so, any suggetions on where to find the lamps? I am hoping this can improve the sharpness...

No your model has three CRTs (picture Tubes) cleaning the mirror may help to restore the sharpness and brightness unless you have other issues. I would try cleaning the mirror first. Dont use windex, just a soft damp cloth with water then dry

Blue spot on screen

Hi. this is called convergence failure. the convergence board is a circuit board that regulates the RGB(RED BLUE GREEN) streams that make up the color picture. If the convergence board chips are malfunctioning, you will see a distorted view of these RGB streams. This is what you are experiencing at this time.

Simply replacing the convergence board or chips will fix this issue.

Please rate and have a great day:)

Convergence. seeing three colors at once

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

AKAI PT4298HD - Does not turn on

Mine had the same symptoms. It was the convergence board. I replaced it and all is fine. the part number is BP95-00142E and is available from vancebaldwin.com. It's simple to replace...

you can check this before you buy the part. take off the lower back of the tv. Convergence board is on the right in about the middle of the tv - top of the lower part of the back. comes off with one screw. you can unplug the power (mine was a red plug), then plug the TV back in and it should come on. If it does, picture will be bad, (it can't converge the tubes, obviously), but you should see the picture.

good luck

Your Convergence amp ICs are bad. Heres how you fix It.
they are located on a huge heat sink inside your set. Just look for the largest aluminum heat sink inside your set. You will notice them they are large black ICs with about 16 pins on them. Just unsolder the old ones and solder in the replacements. just be sure to put some heat sink compound on the back of the new ICs where they contact the heat sink. You can get a de-soldering iron at radio shack with a rubber bulb to make the de-soldering alot easier and you will also need a low wattage soldering Iron to solder in the new ones. Just mark any wires you remove to get the convergence module out. That way you will know where the wires plug in when your finished. It will need a convergence adjustment when your finihed. Be careful not to bridge any of the pins with excess solder. Inspect the pins with a magnifying glass when your finished to make sure the solder from any adjacent pins arent touching each other.

My Picture is in Red and Green??

This is a convergence problem. From your menu, go to Menu, Function, Convergence and then use you remote to try to adjust your colors. If you can not get them to line up this is a problem with the convergence board. The convergence amps (STK392-040 x 2)are internally shorted. These can be replaced or the whole convergence board can be replaced. It's cheaper to replace the amps, but more convienent to replace the board (especially for the less electronically inclined!! :) Hope this help you out....
