Question about Hotpoint TDL15 Electric Dryer

Hotpoint DLB 1550 clothes dryer belt replacement

Hi, my dryer still heats but the drum doesn't turn. I was able to get the top off and found that, as I suspected, the belt was broken. Finding a replacement belt should not be too hard, but I'm not sure how to install it. It looks like I'll have to get the front off, and I'm worried about messing with the wiring. I don't want to cause any damage I can't fix. There don't seem to be any (free) repair instructions for this model on the web. Does anyone know where I can find some, or have any advice they can share? I'm particularly hoping for instructions with pictures, but I know this may be asking a lot. Thanks! Morgan

I have the dryer open and the belt around the drum but I can't find the motor to put the belt around the motor and idler pulleys. The diagram I have looks like it should be in the front bottom right. Do I need to look somewhere else? Please help.

But how do I get to them? Right now I have the top and front off the dryer. How do I get to the back (especially under the drum)?

I don't know of any sites with pictures but, remember just average people assemble these so it's not as hard as it seems. The electrical connectors are one way fit so you don't have to worry about mixing them up. If your worried though use tape to lable where they go. The drum rides on the front of the dryer so when you remove the front the drum will drop down. Remove the old belt and then slide the new belt back to where the old belt rode on the drum. Make sure there are no twists in the belt. Loop the belt on the motor pulley and the loop it over the tensioning wheel. Make sure the tension wheel puts plenty of tension on the belt. Have someone help you hold the drum in place while you put the front on.Before you close the top turn the drum by hand to make sure it turns smoothly. Then close it up and run it empty and listen for squeaks and scraping sounds. Good luck and if you have more questions ask. I can help you through if you need help. Please rate me so I know if I'm helping. Thanks

Good deal. I'll try and answer as fast as possible.

The motor and tensioner are towards the back of the dryer. The motor is to the rihgt and the tentioner is usually towards the middle in the rear.

I always put the belt around the drum and then slide it back to where the old belt was on the drum, you can tell by the mark made by the old belt. Then, laying down, I reach under the drum and feed the belt onto the tensioner and then stretch the belt over to the motor pulley. If you have someone tilt the front of the drum up while you are putting the belt on the tensioner and motor it helps. Sorry it's just a pain to do. Be careful though there are sharp edges and screws sticking out in there.

Hot point dryer drum does not turn, but the dryer will heat?

That might be bad glides on the front. Newer models have glides on top of the drum while older models have glides on the bottom. Both are easily replaceable. The belt might be broken because of the glides.
Not all hotpoint dryers are built the same but I made a few videos of these dryers to give an idea how to get into them:

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

Where do I find the heating element in my hotpoint dryer

Heating element is behind the drum. Disconnect power. Use putty knife to release 2 spring clips holding top at front edge of dryer. Swing top back. Remove two screws holding dryer front to sides near open top. Swing dryer front to the side. (you don't have to disconnect the door switch wires) Remove plastic tub block at top center of opening. Release belt. Pull up on back of drum, then pull drum out through the open front of dryer.

change the drive belt. evidently the belt has stretched to the point the belt tensioning device can no longer do its job. when you change the belt make a diagram of which way the belt is reaved through the tensioning device. if you don't you'll be back here asking how to arrange the belt.

Fisher Paykel Elec. Dryer

Usually the belt is a single piece that wraps around the entire drum. The fact that you smelled something and that you feel the clothes are not being tossed tells me that the belt was slipping on the pulley of the motor that drives the drum. This will heat up the belt causing the smell. If the belt gets too loose, this will happen. I'd replace the belt, and I think you'll be back in action.

Let me know what happens. Please rate accordingly.
