Do you get error when trying to open it? Are you trying to access it through start/programs/accessories/system tools?

Have you tried opening system restore through msconfig?

Open your system properties. Check to make sure the system restore feature is enabled. I had to do this on my old computer as you have to tell the restore feature how much hdd space to dedicate to restore functions. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.

Two possible solutions.
Roll back system with System Restore. Win 7 - Start > Search type System Restore. XP - Is Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Restore. Now choose a date prior to problem. You may have to try a few dates.

Try disabling startup programs. Go to Start > Run (search in Win 7) and type MSConfig. In Startup tab, uncheck anything that you don't want Windows to load automatically. It will make Windows boot faster and use less resources while running. This just disables them in startup. Programs will still load, but when only you initiate.

Xp pro sp2 desktop icons have become mere links without any program / application skins" . Have been opening program from start menu. pls help!!!!

Hi,

It sounds like you have a virus infecting the computer.

I recommend that you attempt to restore the system to an earlier date before the problems occurred.

If you click on the start menu and click on run, type rstrui.exe and hit the enter key.

System restore will pop up, choose a date that your comfortable with and see if you can restore the system.

If you experience any difficulty please post back.

Good luck.

My computer properties system restore check if system restore is turned off.

If yes turn on all drives and restart.

If system restore is on then you need to create a new admin account and check system restore settings.

Also you need to have 6gb of free space in windows partition

AVG will no install error 0x800736b1 also retrirve my desktop

Hi there. My name is Alex and Im here to help solve your problem

First of all, AVG has always had a problem installing when windows updates are enabled and download and install automatically. I would recommend uninstalling all updates that have been installed to your computer and disable automatic updates which I will explain to you below

To uninstall the updates.
Click start, settings and click control panel.
On the icon add and remove programs, please double click
You will now see all the programs and updates installed on your computer. The microsoft updates are located near to the bottom of the list and there may be a lot of them installed. You can only uninstall one update at a time. You may be prompted that uninstalling a windows update may cause a program not to work properly, this is normal so you can continue uninstalling them. When you have uninstalled these updates please restart your computer.

To disable the automatic updates

Right click on your icon My computer or My pc which is located on the desktop or on the start menu (if you are running windows xp) and select properties
You will then see a sub menu called 'Automatic updates' and inside this menu you will have the choice to disable the updates

If you are using windows xp and you have system restore enabled on your computer, then you will be able to take the computer back to an earlier time when it was working correctly. Please save all documents first to insure that nothing will be lost if you decide to do a 'system restore'. There is a very friendly wizard to help you restore your computer. You can get to the system restore by clicking start, programs, accesories, system tools and selecting system restore.

Regarding your problem about your desktop disappearing, to restore your icons on the desktop, right click anywhere on the desktop and select organise icons and be sure that the heading 'show desktop icons' is ticked. This will restore your desktop items

Last of all try installing AVG, if you still experience problems with this issue, then please let me know. Im happy to help
