I recently purchased a Nikon N80 (from a New York dealer even though I live
in California). Most of the time I am unable to get it to focus on anything
over 10 feet using an existing Tamron 28-200 D compatible lens (based on the
red dot seen through the viewfinder). The lens worked great on an N70 I no
longer have. Now I am trying to figure out whether this is a lens problem
or a camera problem. Since the lens worked with another camera and because
the lens has been in production far longer than the camera, I am leaning
toward the N80. Is anyone aware of design or manufacturing problems in this
area for this camera?

I'm focusing on something difficult like a very flat texture that's hard to
"read".

in low light. Used the same lens with a F801s without problems too.

zoom lengths or ceratin one(s)?
The only time my N80 hunts (has problem focusing) is in low light
situations and it would'nt do that except that I have disabled the bright
xenon* powered aim assist light that I found annoying, as do any subjects
in the scene.
Also, what "red dot" do you speak of? The only dot on my veiwfinder display
is a green one. Solid means focused, blinking means not focused. (Even in
manual) If you have a red dot somewhere, then that may be your problem.
*No it not really xenon but it damn sure is bright :)
Best of luck,
edb
