I'm not sure the problem gregfindlay2 has is the same as carolanne_th. For carolanne_th, my question is first, are they purchased DVDs? It could be possible if it's a burned DVD, the burning software is not configured correctly. (This is what I suspect for gregfindlay2.) One possibility is that the DVD player is not connected to a sound input inside the case with a cable. I've not tested a DVD drive without that cable. It's a small 4-wire cable that plugs in just beside the wide cable on the DVD. It usually plugs into the sound card (or a recepticle on the MB). What is the program plays the DVD? Windows Media Player or another like Roxio or PowerDVD?

This is very likely a codec problem. A codec is a software component used with video and audio players that translates the electronic media file into something that can be displayed. Most of the time, the video codec will be out of date and you'll hear the audio but not see any video. You've got the reverse problem, obviously.

Unfortunately, Microsoft does not make this easy. Even the latest download of codecs from Microsoft doesn't necessarily update the Windows Media Player to play any DVD. You will need to do a codec search and download the latest. Last time I checked, 'download.com' had them available (this is CNet's download website). Good luck!

You can try the one from Microsoft (it may solve your problem):
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...

If the Microsoft one doesn't help, here's the one from CNet:

PHILIPS CDRW/DVD SCB5265 ATA Device cannot play most DVDs

I'm guessing you may have locked the DVD region. If you right-click on the device in Device Manager and click the Region tab, does it say 0 changes available? Acer won't fix this, and claim you have to replace the drive. Can't find a firmware flash for this drive online, will post back here if successful!

Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 5535 with password in the bios

Unfortunately, if he put a sysetm BIOS password and doesn't remember it, you need to contact Acer's website.

You can have a electronics technician jumper all electrical current to wipe out the BIOS password, but contact acer first to make sure that there is not another method.

Acer Aspire 5535-6608 crashing

This problem is due to a failing hard drive I believe. When the virus scan is working you get a clicking sound then it crashes. Clicking sounds from your laptop while running scans on the hard drive are bad. The first thing to do is to get your irreplaceable files backed up then contact a service professional to get the drive replaced. If it is a reputable service person they should be able to clone the drive over to a new drive with no major issues. Be sure to insist on your old drive back. Even though it may have issues, my guess is that you still have personal information you would not want someone else to get hold of.

My laptop wont play dvds!

One of two possibilities:

1. Your laptop does not have a DVD player installed. Check the bezel on the optical drive and see if it says DVD on it. If not, then it won't play DVDs.

2. The DVD player needs to be replaced as the DVD laser has gone bad.

RE ACER ASPIRE 5735 No sound on DVD

You need to play DVDs through Acer Arcade. To do this you can turn off autoplay (use help function), or assign Acer Arcade to automatically play DVDs. If you still want to use Windows Media Player to play your DVDs you must uninstall Acer Arcade.
