Use the zoom knob in playback mode to zoom in on the picture and see if these defects are visible then. If not, insert the card into a card reader plugged into your computer and copy the files manually rather than copying over the USB cable.

I don't believe you will be able to recover them. I did the same thing when I first got mine. One thing I learned is that you can't take the memory chip from another camera and put it in yours. You have to format it with your own camera. Don't try to format it with your computer either.
The only thing you can do is format the thing in your camera and try a few pictures again. Occasionally you can mess up the memory card too if you try to transfer files back and forth from your computer to the memory card.
I have found that while it's generally OK to transfer files from the memory card to the computer it's not a good idea to do the reverse.
