When the microwave is cold it is quiet but after it has heated food the door creaks when opened and closed. The microwave is brand new but arrived with a dent on the left side panel near to the front / hinge. I don't want want to have to go through the trouble of returning it but if the dent is causing problems with the door, creating the creaking noise and maybe other problems with the seal then I will have to return it.

Check whether there is a proper power supply. Look to see whether the cord is connected to a grounded 3-prong outlet and the cord is fully plugged in. If the electrical system is built-in and no power cord is visible, replace or reset the household fuse or circuit breaker.
Some basic microwave operational steps may affect whether the microwave is heating. Open and close the microwave door, as the unit will not function with the door open, and push "Stop/Clear" to cancel any previous settings, such as the timer, which do not heat the microwave oven.
Setting the Microwave
Once the power to the microwave has been reset, or verified as working, and the microwave is ready to run, select a new cook cycle and press "Start" to see if the microwave begins to run and cook food as expected. Allow the food to cook for the alloted time and then open the microwave door and check to see if the food has cooked or heated. Choose a longer cooking time and restart the microwave if food is heating but is cooking slowly.
If all efforts to troubleshoot the function and power to the microwave still do not get the appliance heating food as expected, there may be a repair issue that needs to be addressed. Contact professional technician for advice.
Use a microwave safe dish and put in some water. Now open door and keep the dish on the glass plate. Close the door, select the power to be medium or high. Or choose a fast cook. Press 0 and the start button as the microwave should start up. If there is no heat after the cycle then it is possible that the magnetron, the capacitor or the fuse is open.
Please check your door safety interlock switches. Find them inside on the side opposite the hinge. If they measure open both with the door open and the door closed, they must be replaced. You are looking for one or more micro switches.
These switches are how the device knows whether the door is open or not - forget what YOU know about the door - the device must know the door is closed in order to turn on the heat.
I suspect the door lock interface switch(es) are burned out. Unplug it, be mindful of the 25,000 volts in the silver thing. Check the micro switches (look where the door closes on the top right side, probably) two positions, normally open or normally closed. check them for proper operation.
Micro switches are the most common of microwave failures because most of us open the door while the machine is running causing arc at the switch and burning up the little contacts.
I have the same problem. Everything seems to work except it doesn't heat up food.
I remember last time when it was working. I pressed the start botton before I closed the door. So it didn't start automatically, and I pushed start and it worked(it still heat up the food), but it doesn't work now. Help Please!!!
I have a Whirlpool Gold GH5184XPQ.
if electronic control, one of two things come to mind. 1)your toutch pad is defective.replace it. 2)you electronic board has a leaky component.not very likly though. believe it or not, ive seen it start before by itself then i noticed a large quantity of bugs inside the glass which i realised triggered the microwave 0ff.
