The sensor on the motherboard has possibly failed.
when you close the back cover an arm on the inner cover moves into the close position .This arm locates itself between a sensor on the motherboard .You can see the arm to the right hand side on the inner cover it sweeps in a slotted arc.
The only fix that I know is to replace the motherboard SORRY

I pulled paper out but I have bits of paper still stuck and cannot reach them. How do I get it out? They are way in the back.

Most printers have a flap at the back which you can open to get at damaged paper - it's not always obvious what to do, but an HP printer has a knob which you twist and the cover comes away.
I suggest a pair of fairly long tweezers is helpful to pull out bits

After removing all paper, close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover), turn the machine off, and turn it back on.
* Be careful not to touch the components inside the machine.

Printer indicates paper jam every few pages, but there is no paper anywhere in the paper path. If I open the top cover and close it, it will print a few more pages, then indicate another paper jam

Paper jams can be tricky to solve. The paper is usually stuck inside the printer mechanism so even if there is no visible paper jam, you will still get the paper jam error. Try this:

1. Turn off your printer
2. Open all trays and remove any paper stuck there
3. Locate the button to open the printer, open it and remove any paper stuck there also.
4. Repeate the above step for all buttons that you can find to access the inside of the printer
5. Close all doors and put back all trays
6. Turn on your printer

BROTHER PRINTER HL-2140

Try turning the printer off and back on. if this doesn't help, open any cover that will open and look for paper still in the printer. many times, if you stop the printer mid-job, paper will be stuck in the back of them, and most printers will not recover until you remove the paper jam.
