Is this the BIOS password, or the password for a Windows XP user account?

It looks like Dell is pretty tight with this info. They want you to contact their tech support in one of these ways:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/contact_technical_support?c=us&l=en&s=gen

Before doing that though, I'd remove all power, unplug the CMOS battery and let it sit for a while before hooking the battery back up, applying power and see what happens.

If it is a windows password, use hiren's boot disk, easy peasy, if it is a bios password, little bit more work involved.have to bridge the chip out and timing is critical.

What would the default password be as my dell latitude c640 is now asking for one after it crashed

If it is a BIOS or a HDD password, then there is no universal default password and you will need to contact Dell details here:
http://www.fixya.com/support/r3656360-dell_portable_computer_bios_hard_drive
Since it is a Latitude C Series, it has lifetime free phone support from Dell
If it is a windows password

Lost password in Dell C640 laptop

It ian't a big deal, one phone call to Dell Technical support 800-624-9896 Verify that you are an authorized user of the system, and they will generate a master password for the system. (If out of warranty, there may be a support fee)

Unlock password protected Dell C640

If it is a passwd set in the bios...good luck. You may have to download a disc from techspot.com
If it is a windows passwd after the dell splach screen tap F8 this brings up the Advanced Startup Menu. Select safe mode and log in as the administrator. From there you can remove or change the password for all accounts. If there was never an account setup on that laptop and the Administrator account is being used then you will need a disk fron techspot.com to retrieve that password.

Dell Latitude c540/640

Windows Vista is not supported on Dell Latitude C540/C640. There are no drivers for the hardware of this model. Many older computers have that problem. You can try Microsoft to see if they even exist: http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx
You might have to fall back to XP.

Dell latitude c640

Hi

Both Dell Part numbers 18THT and 5W299 are 8X DVD-ROM Drive Modules. DPN 18THT is compatible with Latitude C series and DPN 5W299 is compatible with Latitude D series. The two drives have different and incompatible connectors.

Your Latitude C640 is a C Series Latitude. You can therefore not use DPN 5W299.

If you need a DVD drive module, get DPN 18THT or an alternative Latitude C series drive.
