Many times what happens is during Microsoft updates this audio card PC driver gets lost. You may need to go to Dell's Web site to locate your specific Model's audio card driver and then reload it. Worth a try! Blessings, A/V Media Guy
You can download the drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model laptop, better still type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop. Also make sure you select the Windows XP or Vista version of the driver for your Windows operating system. Click on this link :- http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
First check the sound settings, it could just need adjusting. If the settings are correct, then you have a driver glitch, uninstall the sound drivers from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the sound card and reinstall the drivers automatically. Then check Dell's support site for updated sound drivers.
