1989 Honda Prelude, passed all smog tests except idles at 1100rpm...what's the problem?

Passed all smog tests except it idles at 1100rpm, tech says it should be 800 to 850 rpm.

Start spraying carb cleaner around the intake and listen for rpm drop.

if you are somewhat mechanically inclined you should be able to follow these steps in order I put them. #1 Disconnect the negative battery terminal.#2 Disconnect the electrical terminals from the alternator.#3 Loosen the alternator adjustment and pivot bolts and remove the belt.#4 Remove the bolts and separate the alternator from the engine.#5 Remove the alternator bracket from engine.#6 Remove the fuel filter and any of the vacuum lines in the way.#7 Remove alternator from top of the car.#8 Installation is reverse of removal.

I had the same problem on a Rover. There was a leak in inlet manifold that was caussing the problem.
To verify, spray some sealant to temporarily seal the inlet manifold .and the eratic idling should disappear for some time.
If it does, you know there is leak in inlet manifold which you can take of and refit with a new gasket.

SOURCE: 1989 honda prelude. engine surges. from normal to 2100 rpms

There is a warm up valve on the throttle body(should have 2 small coolant hoses). remove the valve and have someone start the car while you block the port to the valve on the intake. If that clears up the problem you can cut a piece of cardboard to mount in between the valve and intake.should straighten it out.

92 Honda accord 2.2 I went and try to smog out and it passed everything except the emission test how do I fix this so it would pass smog

Try driving at high revs for an hour on a motor/freeway, that will clean the exhaust and internals.
It may help if you normally use it for town/intermittant journeys.
If it still fails, consult a Honda service department for advice.

2.3 dohc wont pass smog

Did you do a full tune up?
Do a compression test and check for any cyclinder that is low in PSI.
Look of wet plug and oil coated plug(s).
== Which item CO,NOx,Hc is failing?
You may need to repose to add information.
Use a plug non-fouler / protector on the weak cylinder will help if HC is just shy from the passing limit.

89 Honda Prelude failing emissions rich

is everything stock? and you have catalitic converter in place?

Stop by Schucks auto supply and have them run the codes. i'm sure there is a code if you cant pass emissions. your check engine light bulb is probably out.

and usually the first cause is the first o2 sensor.
