1. Use another computer
2. Use a bootable CD / DVD preferebly LINUX such as SUSE, FEDORA, UBUNTU or even BACKTRACK and get all your stuff out of your Maxtor.
3. Insert another hard drive and install OS on it then connect your Maxtor and get your stuff out of it

All three lights are flashing

No experience with this model but if you open the enclosure there is a regular hard drive inside. You may be able to fit it inside a pc, or use a hard drive caddy to get at your stuff

My Maxtor 2TB hard drive is failing when I operate it, I have a lot of info on it and cannot access it, when I restart it won't show on my computer and after 5 minutes will say I have to format it.

I have a Maxtor as well that behaves badly sometimes. I did some research online and found out that the drives are using a Linux type of OS inside. They get out of sync and cause the drive to think it is not ready.

I found that if I plugged and unplugged the drive until I got a response, I could access the data.
I would recommend a different drive for your stuff. One that doesn't use this type of OS.

Maxtor also has a problem with one of the drivers under Windows 7. All in all, I recommend replacing this drive if you can retrieve the data.

My vista computer doesn't recognize my maxtor one touch 4 external harddrive...it doesn't recognize it on my xp either how can I fix this...I have a lot of stuff backed up on this and it is less than a...

HI,

What I would suggest, is to take the drive and install it as a slave drive. Make sure your pin settings on the drive are set to slave, and your main drive is set to slave. Then XP and Vista will recongize it so you can pull the data off it, then reformat the drive and see if you get any errors.

Good Luck

Maxtor drive can not be detected from computer

You have lost the drivers for it. Go to Maxtor's web site and search for the drivers download for the model you have then install them.

In XP and Vista no need to install.
They will detect automatically.
To know, goto Windows explorer.
Find drive letter other than your local drive.
Usually called "removable disk".

Maxtor basics external drive

Hi Nuisance101, I recall your running vista. Vista is a nightmare. If you cound only see the troubles we see on a daily basis here at FixYa you'ed understand. It's a common problem with Vista not seeing USB devices, externial devices. It does & then the next second it doesn't. Same for all external devices. I'm am 100% sure the trouble is not your system or your devices. It's Vista. I have gone over dozens of post from vista users. One would think MS has been on vacation since the release of vista. You can look at vista's web site for help for a possible fix, at this link. (I have no faith). MS blames driver software. Your Maxtor drive is external. Henve no driver software.
So it falls into that vista area of one time vista see's the drive & the next it does not.
Either way I though Maxtor addressed vista issues. I prefer Seagate drives myself. Personally know lots of people who's Maxtor's drives have just gone down for no reason. Seagate bought Maxtor.

Most of the post from vista users, claim users should check vista's updates often. Since Max Blaster did its job, I'm inclined to blame vista.

I wish I could give you a better fix or suggestion but I'm up against vista. That's why I run WinXP Pro. I do not have these problems.

Best wishes Nuisance101!
Mike
