My Maxtor 3200 will not turn on. Error code 10. It is not being recognised by my laptop

This drive worked fine for months - than just one day poof! The system shows the new hardware, it shows recognized and ready to use. The "safely remove hardware" shows the drive there - but it does not show up in windows explorer... I am not a novice and have tried several normal windows solutions - but stil not in explorer. Any other ideas short of buying another Ext. HD? Tom A

My computer indicates that a mass storage device is there but when you look in my computer it does not show it there. The power light is on but the drive does not sound like it is working.

My Dell computer does not recognize my 3200 hard drive and when I took it to the shop they said there was a problem but couldn't fix it. I just want to get the files loaded on the 3200. James Hodges

Put hard drive in another computer and set as "slave" if not SATA. Start computer and access hard drive from windows as a separate drive, as you would a floppy or CD and retrieve data.

I have a Maxtor Storage 360 GB Hard Drive. Recently, I disconnected it from my computer. When I reconnected the external drive my computer, at first would not recognize it. Now, it shows up as drive F, but...

Depending on what peripherals you have, each time you you plug a drive in, it may be assigned a different drive letter. You can get a conflict going on there from what it once was and what it now is. You can change the drive letter to one of your choosing however in the "control panel". Try accessing different drive letters to see if your data isn't under another letter first.

reboot the laptop, reseat the cables, and try connecting the drive to different usb port. if that still doesn't work, most likely the drive has gone bad.

Try connecting the Maxtor to another computer and if it functions normally, then backup your data. Then try formating the Maxtor on your computer.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 - flashing green light.

Solution:
First, disconnect the power cable from the back of the external hard drive:
If the power supply LED continues to blink:
  1. Connect the power supply to a different outlet (or instead of connecting to a power strip, connect directly to an outlet in the wall).

  2. If the power supply continues to blink after changing outlets, this indicates that the power supply is defective and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the power supply stays solid, then reconnect to the external hard drive and see if the drive spins.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 problem!!!

First, try another USB Cable. If that does not work properly then I would suspect the box or the drive has failed. If you just bought it, return it to the store and complain. They may replace it. As for your data?

Now if you want to become techie you can remove the hard drive from the box and attach it to you computer either copy the files back if you do not have them on your computer or format the drive if you have your files. Then put the drive back in the box and try to get a refund or buy a different external. I like a metal box with an AC cord plug. Best of luck.

Maxtor 3200 power indicator lights but computer won't recognize

ooooh, that sucks.

I assume you have tried unplugging it and plugging it back in?
Have you tried to see if it will work on a different computer?

I hop you had it all backed up.
If nobody else's suggestion beat mine...then I give you 2 options.
You have to take it apart (might have to break the shell, since most aren't designed to be user friendly), once you have the actual hard drive out of its housing, open up the side of your computer, and hook it up.
it will have to diferent connection points. One will be power (thats the plug that has (i believe) 4 pins in it...hook that up so your drive has power...the other plug is for data (read/write), its either a sata or ide (depending on how they (maxtor) made it). I assume you dont know what sata or ide is...just google pics it...once you see a picture...you'll know.

anywho, once its hooked up...start you computer back up (FYI, when you do this 'operation', shutdown your pc...and then unplug it)
once you have it all done and loaded back into windows, it should automatically detect it (give it a few minutes).

that scenerio I just laid out for you, is assuming its anything but a hard drive issue.

if it is indeed a hard drive issue....then apart from sending to to some VEEEERY expensive palce that could extract the data for you. theres only one more option. Put the hard drive in the freezer for several hours, then take it back out and hook it up to you computer, if it detects it...move fast, and start transfering all your files off it...cause now its living on borrowed time.

the reason this works **sometimes**, is because of the hard drives heat, its its platter actually expands over time a (very very very tiny bit), enough to mess it up, and when its chillin in your frezzer, the platters contract a little bit...making you able to get your data back...hopefully.

hope all goes well.

My Maxtor 3200 died also. I took the following steps to get it running again.
(1) Remove plastic box from around unit. Carefully stick a screwdrive in the case division and pry it apart. It is not easy, but do will finally come apart.
(2) inside you will find a perforated metal box. There are two screw on each side of the box. Remove and separate the two halves.
(3) there you will discover that inside is just an ordinary Maxtor hard drive like you would buy in the electronics store. Attached to the HD is a PC board. There are 3 screws holding the PC board down. Remove the screws and carefully remove the HD and PC board.
(4) unplug the powere plug and the IDE interface from the HD. Now you have a HD that you can install in your own case (as long as you have a desktop unit and not a laptop).
(5) I installed the HD in an empty slot, connected the IDE cable that was already there (between the CD and IDE interface), plugged in the power plug, fired 'er up, and voila, works like a champ.

I suspect that the problem is in the interface (PC board), since the only thing I did was remove that from the equation. Hope this helps

Kudos! Thanks!
