Question about NetGear RANGEMAX WNR834M Router (WNR834M100NAS)

1 Answer

I cart my IBM Thinkpad Lenova T60 back and forth to/from work and work from home 1/2 the time. Computer stays on most of the time and connects via docking station at work and wireless Netgear RangeMax at home, usually with no problems. Occasionally, like today, the wireless does not connect but when double click the wireless icon in the systray the Choose Wireless Network dialog shows "Not connected" for the Netgear line, but the connect button is greyed out. Doubling clicking on the Netgear line offers me to disconnect, which I do. Then the Netgear line shows Manual and Connect button greyed out, so I double click again and get the Network Key request, click connect and dialog "Waiting for Network comes up but then times out. Another computer right along side the laptop has a wireless connection to the same router with no problems. I know if I restart the laptop I will be ok, but I have like 80 windows open all the time and closing down takes 1/2 hr. Looking for a way to avoid that agony. TIA FAH

Change the wireless security to WEP or WPA-PSK (TKIP)

A. Checking the Wireless Settings of the Router

Note: You need to use a computer hardwired to the router to check the wireless settings.

1. Open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
2. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
3. A window will prompt for a user name and password. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "password".

Note: If it doesn't take password as the password, you might have changed it when you have run the NETGEAR Setup CD so please try other passwords. If you can't remember the password, you need to reset the router and run the Setup CD to reconfigure it.

4. When the setup page opens, click on the Wireless Settings under Setup and take note of the SSID.
5. You may also change the wireless channel here. We suggest channels 1, 6 and 11.
6. At the bottom of the page, look for the Security Options. If in case that the security is set to WEP or WPA-PSK, we have to enter the same wireless security on all wireless PCs. To make sure of the key, we can try modifying the security. Please refer to the following:

For WEP: Select Key 1 and enter 10 hexadecimal digits (0-9 and A-F) on the empty box beside it. Then, click on Apply.

For WPA-PSK: Enter an alphanumeric key (minimum of 8 characters) on the Passphrase box and click on Apply.

Note: The Key and Passphrase are case-sensitive.

7. On the left pane, please scroll down and click on Wireless Settings under Advanced. Please make sure that the boxes for Enable Wireless Router Radio and Enable SSID Broadcast are checked.
8. Click on the Setup Access List button and uncheck the box Turn Access Control On.
9. Click the Apply button.

B. Connecting to the Wireless Network

For Windows XP Service Pack 1:

1. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer. Then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
2. Click on the Advanced tab.
3. Please delete all the preferred networks then click on OK.
4. Right click on the Wireless icon again and click on View Available Wireless Networks.
5. Please select your network and click on Connect. If you have Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Wi-fi Protected Access (WPA) enabled on the router, it will ask you for the network key. Please type in the Network Key and then confirm it.
6. Make sure not to enable IEEE and then click on Connect.

For Windows XP Service Pack 2:

1. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer. Then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
2. Click on the Change Advanced Settings.
3. Click on the Wireless Networks tab remove all the preferred networks then click on OK.
4. Right click on the Wireless icon then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
5. Select your network and click on Connect.
6. If you have Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) enabled on the router, it will ask you for the network key. Type in the network key and confirm it. Then click on Connect.

For Windows Vista:

1. Click Start then select Connect To.
2. Connect to a network window will show up.
3. Select your wireless network and click Connect.
4. It will ask you for a network key. Type in the network key and confirm it. Then click on Connect.

Note: You may use the wireless utility of your wireless adapter in connecting to the wireless network but you need to clear "Use Windows to configure my wireless networks" on the Wireless Networks tab.

I am unable to connect to a wireless network on my ibm thinkpad T60 pc

First is there a security code to connect to your wireless access point? This is YOUR home wireless? Is your wireless adapter enabled, and working properly on the laptop? Reboot the wireless access point by removing th AC plug and wait 30 seconds, plug in, wait for the device to self-test. Cold-start your laptop, unplug. remove battery, plug in, reboot. If that fails go to IBM/ Lonovo website and update driver for wireless adapter. And all other deivers as needed.

Upload pictures from camera

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Nikon Transfer orPicasa.

Laptop mouse problem

This is a common problem with laptops, unfortunately, there is no real solution of fixing the touch pad.
The best solution is to use an external usb mouse.
I recomend an optical mouse, they cost about 5 US dollars.
