Hi, I have had lots of experience installing hard drives. You never get exactly 80gb when it is partioned. Some space is utilized for other things that cannot be used. So you aren't doing anything wrong. Just another way companies can make you think your getting more then you really are.

You should be able to get into the BIOS or Setup without a hard drive. Power on the machine and notice what function key it tells you to hit to get into the bios or setup.

Most laptops have a cover on the bottom that once removed, the hard drive goes there. Normally you will see 3 circular discs that represent the hard drive. You'll need to know whether your drive needs an IDE or SATA hard drive. Laptop hard drives are 2.5 inches or just ask for a laptop hard drive. Since the drive is missing the caddy that holds the drive in place might be missing too. And some laptops be it IDE or SATA uses an interface that sticks on the drive too. I think you need the help of a professional. I'd say you're looking to spend $80 - $125 just on parts depending on what is missing and needed.

SATA Hard Drive Type The Dell Optiplex GX280 Takes?

Hi,

It makes no difference providing the computer motherboards support SATA interface.

SATA 1 and 2 drivers are in the BIOS. If all the computers have SATA 1 you can upgrade the BIOS to latest version via Dell's support website.

My hard drive just crashed on my Sony Vaio VGC-LS30e so I replaced the hard drive with a WD SATA HD and the computer is not recognizing it, neither is BIOS. Any suggestions? I went to put the old HD in as...

A bit of research revealed that the system came with a 250GB SATA drive, and the BIOS should have recognized either drive. Check the cable from the Hard Drive to the Mother Board if possible, including the Power connectors.

Dell inspiron 1520 error code 2000-0146

I had the same problem and came across this solution that worked for me as well:
Re: windows Vista will not start 18 Aug 2009 07:28PM I was getting a the same error codes and couldn't get Windows to boot up at all. I went to BIOS set up (restart your computer and hit F12 when the BIOS screen comes up), went to onboard devices and changed the SATA Operations from ACHSI (don't know how it got there) to the factory default setting ATA. Then I started up in "repair mode" (which was an option that was coming up when I tried to boot up before but never worked) - it went through a repair check and went to login screen.
Prior to finding this - I tried several things including start up from the Reinstallation disc, but nothing worked. I was ready to buy a new hard drive, but don't have to. Works fine!
Not sure what caused the problem to start with. It is an "Inspiron 1520"

I think my HD went out, so I bought a new one, gx280 compatible

set the SATA OPERATIONS to RAID/AUTODETECT in bios...and then do the reinstallation

you may have to even install the raid drivers which is available on the dell resource cd...when u start setup at one point it gives you an option to press F6 to install third party drivers opt for it and install the raid drivers using resource cd if the first option doesn't help

After installing a new SATA hard drive the PC doesn't 'see' it

When rebooting, press F2 or Del to get into the Dell setup (BIOS). Once in there, look around for an integrated RAID controller and see if you can disable it.

This may or may not be related to your "closedown IRQ failures" though. Have you set the new drive to match the data speed of the old drive? Earlier SATA had a 1.5 max transfer rate, later it went to 3.0 rate. If the new drive is looking for data at the faster rate that may cause problems too, and you should be able to configure the new drive with the proper rate using utilities available from the manufacturer of the drive.

Ah, ok. According to the manual, on page 1-23...here's what you need to do.

According to this page, you need to set onboard ide operate mode to "Enchanced Mode", and Enchanged mode support on to "Sata".
