Hi, I have had lots of experience installing hard drives. You never get exactly 80gb when it is partioned. Some space is utilized for other things that cannot be used. So you aren't doing anything wrong. Just another way companies can make you think your getting more then you really are.

SATA Hard Drive Type The Dell Optiplex GX280 Takes?

Hi,

It makes no difference providing the computer motherboards support SATA interface.

SATA 1 and 2 drivers are in the BIOS. If all the computers have SATA 1 you can upgrade the BIOS to latest version via Dell's support website.

Was the original drive also a SATA? If not, then you would need to enter the bios setup and enable the onboard SATA channels. If the bios had gotten defaulted, as from a dead CMOS battery etc. it could have also caused your original SATA drive to be inaccessible.

A bit of research revealed that the system came with a 250GB SATA drive, and the BIOS should have recognized either drive. Check the cable from the Hard Drive to the Mother Board if possible, including the Power connectors.

You have to enter the BIOS and set the Boot Order on with how the computer is going to boot from. Stay alert when power on the computer and see what button to press. Sometimes is DEL, other is F1 or other key depending make, model, BIOS Manuf.

I think my HD went out, so I bought a new one, gx280 compatible

set the SATA OPERATIONS to RAID/AUTODETECT in bios...and then do the reinstallation

you may have to even install the raid drivers which is available on the dell resource cd...when u start setup at one point it gives you an option to press F6 to install third party drivers opt for it and install the raid drivers using resource cd if the first option doesn't help

A new hard drive

The sata connector was probably disabled in the BIOS to prevent you from getting a missing drive error on startup before this was installed. Press F2 at the Dell Splash screen to enter BIOS setup, come down to Drives and change the setting for the sata connector to ON. When you reboot go back into the BIOS setup and it should report the Drive ID and capacity.

Have you tried settings defaults in bios, and making sure the hard drive is plugged into sata0 controller on the motherboard?
