The 2 probs could be related.
The first you need to do is remove the dispenser drawer, and thoroughly clean every part of it, particularly the conditioner compartment, poke clear all the tubes and apertures you can see,the problem is caused by a blockage.
The smell is related to the fact that the waste pipe is probably connected to your sink waste, you need to remove the pipe and check for partial blockage, or if it goes to an outside sink , then you need to get some kind of drain cleaner to pour down the sink..
Also , at least once every 6 weeks do a hot wash with powder, but no clothes in, this helps to keep the m/c clean and prevent build up mould and dirt inside the m/c..
Clean the door seal regularly, when you finish a wash.and leave door open and dry it
This should help disperse the smell.
Plz rate my solution.
Thanks.

I have had a lot of problems with mold in my machine, and it can cause the washer and the clothes to smell bad. When you remove the dispenser drawer, be sure to check for mold on the machine itself inside the space where the drawer goes. Mold builds up on the water outlets. You can use a toothbrush to clean the openings. I have had good results spraying a bleach cleaner on that area, letting it sit for several minutes, then using a spray bottle full of water to rinse the area - the extra cleaner and water drain right down into the tub. I usually run a load of whites first just so I'm sure the bleach is completely rinsed before I wash colors. It's best to leave the drawer out of the machine (and taken apart) when not in use to prevent mold.

we have the same problem, I've found that taking the top off the machine and then the tray and using a jet wash on tray lid cleans all the channels and removes any blockages it, but it keeps coming back after a month or so. so also looking for a longer term fix.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

This is a common problem with many machines and I suspect that it is the conditioner/softener tray which needs a thorough clean,
paying particular attention to the sentences in BOLD ;-0)
-------------------------------------
Remove the complete drawer. To do this you will have to do one of the following-
  • Top catch- push down the lip/catch at the middle rear and pull the drawer out (that's how our Bosch one is removed)
  • release the catches underneath (our daughter's Indesit) or
  • lift upwards on the tray as it is coming out to clear the lip underneath.
It will normally have some sort of cover over it which you must remove to expose the little stuck up pipe/tube. On some models there is just a small individual cap over the tube. The tube is down which the conditioner and water should siphon. It is likely to be blocked by 'gunge'- a mix of powder and conditioner. The whole of the tray, particularly this pipe and the bit which fits over it, must be completely clean and clear for it to operate correctly. It is worthwhile checking fairly regularly.

If this has assisted you please consider a 4 thumbs up for the rating.
Thanks and good luck!

(I am having to guess some of the following!)
Once out identify which tray is for the conditioner- the others are simply 'chutes' and open-ended.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France @ 21:25 Wed evening.

Someone else had this sort of problem about a week ago.
I asked him the question 'does the drain pipe go into a sink u-tube?'' because water from clothes does not smell, especially after washing and rinsing. Sink water CAN smell, especially if there is a partial blockage/sludge in its u-tube which would be shared by the washer. BTW I believe this was his problem.
There should be water in a (non-sink) washer waste pipe u-tube blocking any smells from the rest of the waste system. I suggest checking the sink/washer waste set-up first.
Also, have you cleaned the lint tray/filter recently? If not it could be a build up of sludge there.
If you unaware of where it is (on our Bosch front loader) it is behind the front lower panel - but before starting-
REMOVE POWER FROM THE MACHINE AND HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE AND/OR RAGS TO SOAK UP ANY WATER when the filter cover is removed.
One or other of these should cure your problem I would expect.
If you have trouble removing the filter put a comment on this entry and I will receive notification that you have done and get back to you.

Good luck!

The softener container doesn't empty, remains full after the run

Not familiar with that model but usually the cause is the dispensor is clogged up. Remove and clean.

Smell while washing only

Like bad eggs ?

Do you have a U bend in the wastepipe that takes the water away from your machine

If not then any smells from the pipe run can come back up the outlet pipe

Once you have ran the machine it flushes away the old water and the smell goes away

Detergent tray full of water

Hi....Lift the softener cover off the tray and you will find the syphon tube or the cover underneath are blocked. Push some wire through the syphon tube to make sure it is clear and give everything a good wash.

Fabric softner does not disperse, a smell comes into sink.

Remove the drawer and thoroughly clean out the drawer. They usually have a syphon mechanism which gets blocked. On many, you will find a section of the softener compartment can be removed. Make sure there are no traces of old softener. The eggy smell is due to the enzymes in the detergent not being properly flushed from the machine. Check the waste water pipe is clear of debris and clean out any filters (not all machines have these) - normally under a cover at the front of the machine near the floor. While you have the detergent drawer out, it would be worth cleaning the area as it often gets clogged and covered in detergent or softener, and can block the water feed holes.

After all this cleaning, run the machine on a hot was with no detergents/softeners or laundry in it, to flush it out.

Inglis top load washer smells

Hi Nyree,
Check the center of the agitator, where you add softener.
Remove by pulling up. It will be full of old softener.
It may be necessary to remove the whole agitator ( set screw on bottom).
The inside also gets full of old softener.

Good Luck.
