Use a flash light or take the laptop out in the sun, and boot tell me if you can see the screen or no?
if you do , then you are lucky because this could be one of the two or some times both:
1) Back Light
2) Inverter
you will need an expert to replace those parts for you.

btw it could also be a lid switch.

Let me know how goes it! ;)

Trying to start Lenovo laptop but just the "Lenovo" word shows up & nothing happens

Try to remove your hard drive. The company I work for uses mainly lenovo laptops and we have found if a hard drive goes faulty it will hang at this LENOVO screen. if you remove it and it progresses to the bios (it won't load windows since the hard drive is not in the laptop) you might need to consider replacing the hard drive and reinstalling windows.

Init xml file failed

Is the operating system Windows 7?
How far does the laptop get when booting, do you see the 'Starting Windows' screen, do you get to the login screen?

The most drastic solution is to reinstall the laptop. The recovery partition can be reached by pressing F9 at boot time, you can do a reinstall of the default operating system, ONLY do this if you have your data on the laptop backed up FIRST.
To access or copy files on the laptop you can download and create a rescue CD/USB key with Parted Magic:

Laptop screen white and cloudy

From your description I would expect that the LCD panel has shorted or gone open. Either way the panel needs to be replaced. Depending on the age of the laptop you may be better off getting another laptop, new or used, and just swapping out the hard drive to your drive. If you decide o do this be sure that the laptop you buy is compatible to your old drive.

My compaq will start up saying loading files..then it starts to look like its loading up by showing the green bar moving across the screen...then after that nothing but a blank screen...the lights are...

before windows starts press f8 a couple of times to get into safemode.
if windows doesn't load then you probably have to reinstall windows.
If windows does start, try going into msconfig. Go to Start - Run then type in msconfig. click on the startup tab & try to remove some of the start up programs to see if thats the problem.
