Fn, short for function, is a modifier key on many keyboards, especially on laptops, used in a compact layout to combine keys which are usually kept separate.

My son switched uses of the ctrl and the Windows keys. How do I revert back to original uses. My son does not recall how he did it and I have googled trhis but to no avail

Probably he changed the registry using "regedit" (run it: Start, type regedit in the box, Enter)
Here is the keyboard layout location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout

For your information, there is an apps; it is called SharpKeys. It can change the key function very fast.

What is "FN" key

Most laptop keyboards have a key marked "FN" or "fn". This is just another shift key, like the shift, control, and alt keys. If the instructions say something like "Press fn+F1" then press and hold the fn key, press and release the F1 key, then release the fn key. Exactly the same type of procedure as when the instructions say something like "Press Control+P".

Can you help me and let me know what is the FN Function to hold so that I can have my display back again?

Fn, or 'Function', is a modifier key on many keyboards, especially on laptops, used in a compact layout to combine keys which are usually kept separate. It is typically found on laptops, since a full sized keyboard would be difficult to fit in a laptop chassis.

On the Lenovo S10 - to switch the display on and off you must press FN + F2.

How do I use the function keys to engage the battery charge function - specifically what is the fn key? I don't see in on my keyboard

The function keys are toggled between their different jobs by a key labeled F lock or there is a fn key at the bottom of the keyboard. I was not able to see a keyboard layout for your model, but look for a key near the <alt> <windows> and <ctrl> keys that says fn or the like. It functions similar to a capital letter, press and hold the key, and press the desired function key.

My Acer TravelMate 4672WLMi laptop keyboard diplays the @ key when shift inverted comma is pressed and the reverse with the @ key. The backslash key produces the # key. Any suggestions James South Africa

Hi James

Thank you for your query

Your keyboard settings seems to have gone a bit funny

Please try the following

1) Click Start>Control Panel>Regional and Language Options
2) Under the tab Regional Options ensure that the standards and Location are correct
3) Click on the Languages tab and then click on details and ensure the language is correct
4) Click Apply and then OK

This will resolve the issue for you

If this has been useful please leave postive feedback/vote/testimonial - Thank You Again

Sometimes the keys that have white and blue writing on them will only respond blue. How do i get them to respond as white instead of blue keys?

You have a FNC key on your keyboard. Since it is a laptop, your keyboard can not have all the keys that a normal keyboard has. This is handled by making some keys perform two or more functions. Thus, the alternate key use if the blue keys (function key is depressed). You will pribably find that there is a light labeled as FNC where you see your caps lock, num lock etc.. it sounds to me that you have your keyboard in alternate function mode so that the keys are performing the alternate functions (probably the numeric keys if it is a normal configuration..).
