Reset sql sa password directly and efficiently

A few days ago, I had a painful experience that I lost SA password on my MS SQL Server database, and I almost took the whole weekend to look for an efficient way to reset SA password. I asked friends, searched on Internet and even bought some book.... Fortunately, I finally got a SQL server password recovery software and it instantly reset SA password without data loss. And I also got a couple of good solutions for sql sa password reset to save your weekend in case you have lost or forgot MS SQL Server passwords (SA password!).

Option 1 : Use MS SQL Server Password Unlocker to Recover/Reset SA Password

The most direct, efficient way to reset SA password is to take use of the third part utility - SQL server password recovery software. Just two steps:

Step 1: Access to master.mdf file, which is default at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\master.mdf

Step 2: Select SA password and reset SA password
So, Reset SA password successfully!

Option 2 : Recover or Reset SA Password with Other SQL Server Login
If there is any other SQL Server Login that is a member of sysadmin role, you can log in using that account and reset SA password of SQL Server. Reset sql sa password as described here :

SQL SERVER - Reset Password of SA Login Using Management Studio.

Login into SQL Server using Windows Authentication.

In Object Explorer, open Security folder, open Logins folder. Right Click on
SA account and go to Properties.

Reset SA password, and confirm it. Click OK.

Make sure to restart the SQL Server and all its services and test new password by log into system using SA login and new password.

Option 3 : Recover or Reset SA Password with Windows Login that is a member of Windows Admin Group

If there is any other Windows Login that is a member of Windows Admin Group, log in using that account. Start SQL Server in Single User Mode as described followings :

SQL SERVER - Start SQL Server Instance in Single User Mode.

There are certain situation when user wants to start SQL Server Engine in "single user" mode from the start up.

To start SQL Server in single user mode is very simple procedure as displayed below.

Go to SQL Server Configuration Manager and click on SQL Server 2005 Services. Click on desired SQL Server instance and right click go to properties. On the Advance table enter param '-m;' before existing params in Startup Parameters box.

Make sure that you entered semi-comma after -m. Once that is completed, restart SQL Server services to take this in effect. Once this is done, now you will be only able to connect SQL Server using sqlcmd.

I am tryign to uninstall fix it, get error 5006

Installation or uninstallation of an application or game fails and gives the following error code:

This issue is due to a previous installation not finishing properly

Solution 1. Rename the Installshield folder

Make sure you've enabled Show hidden files and folders.

Find and rename the Installshield folder:

Windows 32-bit: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Installshield

Windows 64-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Installshield

If there is an Installshield file in the Common Files folder, rename that one also (e.g. to Installshield_OLD).

Solution 2. Remove all traces of previous uninstall

If renaming the Installshield folder had no effect, find and delete any traces of uninstalled applications.

Applications that can assist you are: Revo Uninstaller, Windows Installer Cleanup Utility , CCleaner.

Alternatively, do a manual clean-up:

Close all running programs. Then clear the Temp folder (found via input of %temp% in Start > Search or Start > Run).

Use the Windows registry editor to delete registry entries related to the program.

Restart the computer.

hope this helps

If you are having a problem installing a product that uses InstallShield as their installation tool, and the steps below do not resolve your issue, you will need to contact the vendor of the software, as we cannot provide further support. Your vendor, who used InstallShield as an installation tool, created the product that you are trying to install. It is very likely that the error you are getting is related to how the vendor used our product and only the vendor would know which InstallShield product they used, which version and how they programmed it. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

This article applies to the following errors when trying to install an application that uses InstallShield:

Detect Version
Different troubleshooting steps are necessary for different version of InstallShield. To check the version of InstallShield Professional that was used to create the setup, take the following steps:

1.Right-click on the setup.exe
2.Select "Properties".
3.In the Properties dialog, select the tab labeled "Version".
4.Near the top there will be a filed labeled "File Version". The number specified here will tell you approximately what version of InstallShield was used to create this install.

InstallShield 5.x and 3.x
If the version of InstallShield is less than 6.00, see article Q100198, HOWTO: Eliminating General Setup Initialization Errors.

InstallShield 6.x
If the version is 6.00 or greater, continue with the following steps.

Setup initialization errors can be caused by a number of factors. This is a non-exhaustive list of possible resolutions:

1.Insufficient permissions on the machine. If you are using a Windows NT or a Windows 2000 machine, you need to have administrative permissions to run an InstallShield Professional 6.x setup. Make sure you have the correct permissions.

2.If you just ran an InstallShield setup, the engine takes a few seconds at the end of the installation to clean up. During this time Ikernel.exe (the engine file) is running in memory from a previous process. That is why you are not allowed to launch another setup. Waiting a few seconds and running the setup again should resolve this.

3.Check and make sure Ikernel.exe is not in memory. If it is, and no setup is running at the time, end that task and restart the system.

4.Clean out the Temp directory.

5.Delete the Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine folder and then rerun the setup.

6.Reinstalling Internet Explorer (IE) 5.x can also repair a number of corrupted/missing core Windows files from your machine, so reinstalling IE 5.x and the NT service pack is also suggested.

7.Another possibility is that you do not have sufficient COM permissions. For information on how to troubleshoot this, see article Q104986, INFO: Initialization Error Troubleshooting.

8.The other potential cause is a missing Stdole.tlb file. This is a core Windows file and should exist on your machine. Make sure that if you get this file from another machine, the machine is running the same operation system as the machine you are trying to run the setup on.

9.If you are trying to install to a Windows 98 machine, download and run Dcom98.exe from the following site: http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom98/download.asp.

10.Make sure that you are using the latest version of the InstallShield engine. To install the latest engine see article Q105097, INFO: Install the Latest Version of Ikernel.exe

SQL server won't work on my laptop

Two ways to access your server. First, make sure the SQL Server Service is running. Start | Run | Services.msc | Enter. Look for Microsoft SQL Server Service and that it's running. Or Look for the SQL Service Broker icon by the clock and see that it's running. The default instance of SQL Server uses the Hostname. Start | Run | Cmd | Enter. The type hostname. This will be the name to access to server. Then type IPCONFIG, this is then the IP address that you could also use to access it.

SQL Server runs on port 1433, so any firewall has to have it open.

Open Query Analyzer, type in the hostname or ip of the local box, type in "sa" and the password for sa (if setup in mixed mode) or Windows Authentication.

Once you login in, you should now see the databases in the Tree on the left side under the Server | Databases node.

Your description though states "SQL Server won't work on my laptop". TO answer this, the only two SQL Editions that work on anything other than "SERVER" software is SQL Professional and SQL Developer. All others have to be on a "SERVER" platform.
