Question about IBM ThinkPad T23 Notebook

1 Answer

IBM t20/t23 Hi - I have a T20 that went dead (bad mother board I'm told) last year, so I got a used T23. After a few months, it's screen started flickering, then finally went almost totally black (I can barely see the image of the desktop so I know the machine is running, just can't DO anything since it is too black). Can a non-expert (I'm tool handy, just not a laptop geek)take these things apart, then move parts (video?) from the dead T20 to make the 23 work again? How do I know what to move? Thanks... Bob

Hey, Laptops are very fragile and sensitive components! If you feel that you are capable of task like this then godspeed! Something like that could be three things! 1.) Your screen inverter has gone bad! The inverter is the device that provide high voltage power to the lamps in your screen! 2.) The lamps in your screen are bad! These things are usually rated for like 50000 hours. 3.) It could be as simple as servicing the laptop(cleaning up the contacts and ensuring good connection) Laptops come in all shape and sizes, and worse some come with a thousand screws of different sizes! It should be relatively easy to take down but the hard part is putting it back together. I have this friend who, after he re-assembled a laptop, always has extra screws!! He says the laptop don't need em! LOL What i would suggest is moving the entire screen, that way you don't have to take it apart to get to the inverter( should be the only other device located in your screen aside from the actual LCD(the lamps are in the LCD) The models sound very similiar but not sure about them either, it the screen looks the same then you can change it! Practice taking down the t20 first then if it breaks you'll know how NOT to break the t23! lol I would always recommend getting a pro to handle something like this though, cause is very tedious you have to be real careful! Best of Luck! regards, babb

1) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

2) Battery removed, Battery Compartment facing you.

Look at the right inside edge. There is a small plastic cover inside the Battery Compartment.

Remove the one Philips head screw, then remove the cover.

Also, here is the Service Manual,

Drop down to the 8th line. (ThinkPad T20. T20 in blue)
Scroll over, and left-click right on - T23

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.

After you click on the file name, (T23), it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up.

Start on Page 66. Backup Battery is on Page 67.

3) Left-click right on - 1010 Battery Pack, and 1020 Backup Battery.

Nice to have when you are going to clean that puppy out.
(BUY, and wear an ESD wrist strap. Connect it's alligator clip to a good ground source.
Average price is around $3 to $6)

Also nice to have to upgrade the Processor, and a myriad of other things.

hi

the T42 does not have WiFi, instead it facilitates internet connection via 16 BIT & 32 Bit PCMCIA slot to install a WiFi card , in order to go on the internet.

The ThinkPad uses the following adapters: v 360, 365X, 380, 600: 16-Bit PCMCIA v T20, T22, T23: 32-Bit CardBus and MiniPCI v T23: 32-Bit CardBus and MiniPCI Daughter Card v T30: 32-Bit CardBus and LAN on Planar Board (LOB) v T4x: 32-Bit CardBus and LAN on Planar Board (LOB). 16- and 32-Bit PC Card adapters are configured during ThinkPad initialization. ThinkPad T23 white screen

1. your issue may be a bad hard, a damaged or loose flex cable to the LCD screen, a defective CPU (central processing unit, a cmos battery that needs replacement ( this is the battery that retains the information for the motherboard), a bad power supply regulator on the mother board.
2. this is just a few of the issue that have caused a white screen.
3. Laptops are mostly disposable and are usually good for 2to 3 years of service depending on the care taken.
Your friend probably thought he was helping by giving this to you to see if you could use it or part it out.
Not worth the work unless you are into PC repair or project work.

When computer is turned on screen stays black and fan races fast

If you put it in another T23, Windows will recognize the hardware change and ask you to re-activate Windows. Microsoft may or may not require you to pay for Windows again.

T20 Laptop will turn it self off

Failing or clogged fan fan is a good possibility. Fans are cheap on ebay for those and easy to install (2 screws underneath the laptop to remove the keyboard and 3 for the fan assembly itself. I would pull the keyboard and check for dust then replace the fan if that doesnt help.

Dissasembly guide for t20-t23 is online here:
