How do I format the external hard drive on a Macintosh computer?

To format the drive for MAC OSX

1. Connect the drive to your computer.

2. Open Disk Utility. (Applications folder > Utilities folder > Disk Utility). Select the hard drive in the left hand column and click on the Erase tab.

3. In the Volume Format drop-down menu, select Mac OS Extended *.

4. Once you have selected the format and have named the drive, click on Erase. You will be presented with a 'Are you Sure' dialog.

5. The drive will format and upon completion will be available for use.

Note: * For the best performance, we recommend using Mac OS Extended format. However, if you will be transferring files between a Windows system and a Macintosh, format the drive as MS-DOS (FAT32) or use a program such as MediFour

If you run windows, you can right-click on my computer, select management, and locate disk management on the left. Right click on the drive in question (make sure you have the right one!) and select format. If you are on a Mac, you can open Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder inside of Applications), select the drive you want on the left, and go to the Erase tab.

you shouldn't need to do anything to make the drive work on your mac apart from plug it in!

It needs to be formatted for mac use.  If you are going to be using it on both Windows and Mac OS X, you need to format it in windows as a FAT 32 partition.  If you are going to be using it Mac ONLY, then you can format it in disk utility.  

load the driver for mac use, the external hard drive comes with cd, the mac driver should be inside, load it to your mac computer. if you donot have the cd go online to western digital and download it. just load the driver and u will be fine, make sure u connect the cable in right places.

Plug it into your mac, open "Disk Utility" select your Hard Drive in the list to the side, click "RAID" change the Volume Format to MS-DOS (FAT). Now unplug it, plug it into your PC, open "My Computer" right click your Hard Drive and click "Format" change to FAT(it might be FAT 32, or something else). Click "Format." This should work.

what are the tips of hard disk drive troubleshooting

Did you format the drive using Disk Utility? Open "disk utility" from the dock icon or applications/utilities folder. Click the drive name on the left side of the disk utility window. click the "partition" tab in the window, next click the "options" tab and select GUID Partition scheme, or any Mac compatible scheme, read each explanation of the schemes. Name and resize your partitions, click apply. This is how it works running Leopard, not positive if the same applies to Tiger. I hope this helps you

Try going to Applications, Utilities, Disk Utility and use the Disk Utility program to format the disk.
