A chip on the circuit board started smoking

I was watching my tv when the picture went out and i smelled smoke so i unplugged the tv and opened the back. There was a small peace on the circuit board that had started to smoke when i plugged it back on. I am not sure what that peace controls or if it is possible to replace. I cant find any breakdown on what parts are what. please help

I seen smoke coming from the main circuit board in the back of the televison, It looked smoke was coming from I think a fuse. it is a small black square that was attached to a metal plate. On the black piece it had 1ohm on it

where would i find the IHVT?

  • micluccha Jan 02, 2009

how can it i test it to see if it is working correctly, I have friends who has a background in electronics. He has a voltage reader. to test it if that is all that needs to be done. If so what voltage should he look for?

  • micluccha Jan 08, 2009

the varistor behind the resistor was fried and when taken out I could not read the number off it to order a replacement one. When looking at the skematics can you tell me what type of varistor to order.

  • micluccha Jan 09, 2009

replaced the horizontal output transistor(D2578) and the varistor behind it. Now the power light blinks four times then goes off. Then it repeats, blinks four times goes off. The screen will not come on. What could be the problem?

I don't understand what a "small peace' is. There is no such phrase in English.

    Hello,

If possible can you post a picture of the board and the component that was smoking? This will be a great help in seeing what is happening.

    Thank you,

The part which is black and is mounted on the metal plate is the horizontal output transistor (D2578) The part which is 1ohms is a resistor In order to replace, you need to get the location number which is written on the circuit board -for example Q552 could be the location number for the transistor
To get the correct part you have to call sony the manufacturer and give them the name of the tv
the model number of the tv
and the location number of the burnt part
Please refer to a qualified tv repair personnel to do repair on tv

The component sounds like a resistor, and the fact that it was attached to a heat sink means its a power handling resistor. You said it was burning, so this means that whatever it is attached to is drawing too much current. From what you are saying a component on a board is drawing too much current and is causing another component (the 1 ohm resistor) to burn. My question is what board is this (I am suspecting the deflection or the HV power supply). Please post a picture of the board in question. That way I have a visual guide as to the board and if I can find the schematic, or if you can supply the schematic I'll be able to at least give a better diagnosis of this problem.

Thank you,

    Hello,

I have the schematic on file, now what I need from you is a picture of the board and the component, post it here and send a copy to service@electron-age-technologies-llc.com.

    Hello,

when you took the back off of the TV which board was the smoke coming from? The board on the left of the board on the right (facing the rear of the TV?
This will let me know if it is the G board (left side) or the A board (right side).

Send me this ASAP. It will help me locate the possible problem faster now that I found the schematic in my archives.

    Thank you,

    Hello micluccha,

can you give me the resistor number from the circuit board ( The number should be R) i.e. R587 or something like that.

I am currently looking at the schematic and might be able to localize the problem.

    Thank you,

    Hello,

If the HOT (Horizontal Output Transistor) is the problem, I would also suggest checking the IHVT (integrated High Voltage Transformer), since what is puzzling is that that if the HOT has shorted the the current should have also opened the IHVT since it did not the IHVT might be shorted, as cycus suggested if you do not have a background in electronics you should get a qualified TV technician to work on this set for you.

    Thank you,

The IHVT is the biggest component on the G board. It has a large red cable coming from it. It is also referred to as the FBT (Flyback Transformer). This component should be tested and replaced if needed by a qualified TV technician, due to the voltages present on the anode of the CRTs during removal of the HV cable from the transformer.

    Hello micluccha,

To test the IHVT you will need to perform what is called a ring test, if you friend has equipment to do this then it poses no problem. However, make sure your friend tests the Horizontal Output Transistor, the IHVT, and the associated circuitry.

    I hope this helps,

    Hello,

The part number is 1-801-073-31 which is marked as a critical part so you have to replace it with an OEM part. You must contact SONY's Parts Department (go to the SONY web site and look for technical support) give the following information:

    Model Number: KP-61V90
    Board Designation: G
    Reference Number: VDR601
    Part Number: 1-801-073-31

    I hope this helps

The tv keeps turning off after smelling smoke, the color went bad just before the first time

If you smell smoke from the TV turn it OFF and UNPLUG it before you have a real fire. Something is drawing too much current, or it has a short. It is doubtful that someone with out knowledge of electronics could or even should try to diagnose and repair an electronic item that smokes.

sounds like it was enough to pop something in the tv, smell the back of the tv smell if anything smells burnt or hot. unplug the tv and let stand for about a hour unplugged then trying it again but if it does smell chances are you will have to see if your still under warrenty and have the unit replaced.

I have a rca d52w23 while i was watching tv in shut off and there was like a smoke smell I mean I turn it on and it shuts off by it self is it worth fixing it and what can cause this problem

Where there is smoke something burned--unplug set for safety and if curious open rear cover and look at boards near rear of set for a burnt part--that will usually determine if worth fixing or not.

Hitachi 43FDX20B, watching tv, screen went blank, no picture, no sound turn off then back on power light on but the same nothing

The TV computer may have detected an error. See if the problem persist after unplugging the device overnight to reset it. If it does not, the issue may be with the board or its power supply circuit. Probably loose soldering or leaking capacitors.

TV smokes when you turn it on and no picture

Check to see where the smoke is comming from, the far left side of the unit, it is probably the flyback/horizontal output transformer. The big gray/black thing on the board with the two red wires out of the top of it.Replace the horizontal output transistor (D2348) with a new one to increase reliability. It is the large three leged transistor to the left of the transformer. Use Sony parts if possible.
