I have the same problem. When I switch on my acer the power light turns on and the fan whirs but that's it. I also connected a screen and it still didn't shaw a picture. I have been told by a friend that it could be a problem with the motherboard or the capacitors have blown.

I have contacted Acer but I'm still awaiting a reply.

Same problem, power light shows, nothing else works at all.

same as above, no vid, power and fan definatly turn on.  This was after 3 days of running perfectly, rebooted to get into my alternate OS and no vid since, even with external.

My guess is cheap capacitors on the motherboard (video area specificly)

I realy hope this is just a defective unit, cause it realy is a beautiful machine - if you don't intend on gaming.

I had the same issue. It worked fine for a couple of months but one morning I turned the unit on & it was dead. The power light would come on but I got nothing else. It would not POST or show any other signs of life. I took it back to where I got it. They sent it off to Acer for me. The motherboard was dead. Acer replaced the motherboard and shipped it back. It took about three weeks but thankfully I did not lose any of my data as they left the HD intact. It has been working fine ever since (Now I make sure to backup my data on a weekly basis).

I follow instruction on factory resetting Toshiba satellite l655-s5156 and I don't get default screen or nothing saying factory reset

Is the restore partition still there or are you using an OS disc? If you have a new OS that is it, there is nothing else to tell you it is complete.

To run Toshiba Recovery:

Choose the Repair Menu in the Windows boot menu (Press and hold F8 at the Toshiba SplashScreen.

Hold the Zero key during Power Up.

If that doesn't work, you may need to order a Recovery Disc from Toshiba.

To make some things clear: Did you reinstall Windows 7 from Toshiba recovery disk or Microsoft Windows disk?
You can use the HDDrecovery feature to restore your notebook to factory settings.

If you have used the Microsoft disk you need Toshiba recovery disk. HDDrecovery is a Toshiba feature and can only be used with preinstalled OS. Therefore it's not enough that you have already saved the HDDrecovery folder, it will not work!

If you don't have a recovery disk you can order it here:

My dell notebook stoped working it shows only curser on the screen and there are some lines on the screen nothing wrong with the power supply

If it does boot to windows and only does not shows the icons..than you have to click right on the desktop and choose to show icons ..and will be ok ..If the screen you wrote about is just a start screen and it never started windows..than I think it is a windows fault and need to be reinstalled .Do that by entering the recovery partition and go with the total installation of the operation system ..
to do that choose the key indicated on screen and select the action ..
usually on start screen it is written to press F2 for the set-up and f12 for the boot menu and probably F11 for teh recovery ..if it is so ..just press f11 on start ..go to recovery ..choose complete recovery ..and will get it to the factory stage .
If the recovery do not work and you do have a disk for it ..insert the disk and boot from it ..try to boot to recovery with the disk on ..and see if ti works..if it dopes its ok ..if not ..restart . and press F12 to go to boot menu .and choose to boot from CD /DVD drive ..and hit enter .. this will force it to boot from disk and load the recovery .
same procedure with a boot-able disk with operation system, case you do not have any recovery ..or just have recovery for drivers..and you will be forced to use a standard boot-able disk to load the operation system again
have a nice day ..and please rate my answer ..1

How do I reconfigure, or restore to original settings?

Contact your Computer Manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of Vista Recovery disk/s.

They normally do that for a small $ cost.

Also, ask them if you have a Recovery Partition on your Computer/Laptop to restore it to Factory settings.

See if a Manual came with the computer, or go to the Manufacturer's website, email or phone them for info on how to do a Recovery.

Normally, you would press F10 or F11 at Startup to commence the Recovery Process..

Another way I have seen on some models is to tap F8, and go to a list of Startup options, and start a Factory Standards Recovery from in there, by selecting the Repair computer option.

Also ask them if it is possible to make Recovery Disk/s from the Recovery Partition in case of Hard Drive failure or System Crash.

They will tell you how to do that.

Each Computer Manufacturer has their own way of making Recovery Disk/s.

Hello, You'll need to load the cd recovery disk that came with your computer into your cd drive and restart your computer. All factory recovery cd's are self booting. If you can't boot from the recovery cd you might have a bad disk or a hardware problem.
best of luck, mpawlak908

Power cycle the modem/router, which ever it is, or both.

Unplug the power, let it sit for about 30 seconds, plug it back in and wait til all the light stop flashing. Internet light may flicker with activity.

There should be a factory image on the HD when you try restarting it. Hold down the F8 key or F10 key while its rebooting this should start the recovery process you shouldnt need a windows disk.

Windows system32 config system

It sounds like you have an OEM disk of Windows XP from the manufacturer which will not always run as a recovery disk in these situations.

You have two main options; -
  1. If you are still under warranty for the laptop call the manufacturer explan the problem and ask them to send you a working non-OEM copy of the OS/ recovery disk
  2. Borrow a copy of a genuine Windows disk (same version of the OS, e.g. if it is Windows XP Home) and use it to access the Recovery console to run the repair option. Then of course return the disk to your friend.
