Toshiba satellite pro a60 power problem

I recently bought a toshiba satellite pro a60 notebook off ebay and it was working ok. I did a fresh install on it win xp pro. Since then it came up with a fatal error has occoured after booting into windows. error 0x73 power saver. I have googled the problem and sorted it by installing the toshiba hot key utility. When this came up the notebook was switching itself off randomly. then not booting up when pressing the power switch. just the blue led around the switch was coming on. none of the components or screen were booting up. after removing the battery for a few seconds it boots up again. Its still doing this after i fixed the power saver fatal error. I have looked in device manager and it has a missing driver for the sm bus controller!?! not sure if this would cause a problem or if the battery might be faulty? any advice would be most appreciated.

I have flashed the bios as suggested and it cleared the fault for a few hours. Then it came up with this exact problem.

    "critical battery
you should change your battery or switch to outlet power immediatley to keep from loosing your work"
It powered off around 10 seconds after that message appeared and i could smell some burning (shorting?) now it wont power up at all. not even the lights on the front come on when i plugged the power in again after disconnecting the battery for a minute. I have the ac adapter here at work tonight. I'm an electrical engineer by trade so will test it to see if there is an output from it. If so Could it be a thermal fuse gone in the battery? or a short on the motherboard? If anyone has had a similar problem i would be very grateful for some advice. Thanks winyum for you help. it did seem to clear the problem at first. I was thinking it might have been an underlying problem that was covering up this serious one?

    Cheers Steve

Hi there, Your ac adapter is damaged & that's why power does not transfer in your notebook. The capacitor of adapter is burned & that's why the noise started. Thanks & waiting for your feedback.

It sounds like you have 'bricked' your laptop, chances are you would have to have it sent off for repair. do you see the POST screen any more before it powers off?

No power to Toshiba A60

Make sure the laptop is off, pull the battery, and just power it up with the AC adapter. Once you get it going, head over to the control panel, and check the settings in power management. It could be that the settings are wrong and it will not let you start it up with the battery installed.

Hi, I have the same problem, and I have just found out that you can buy a USB Infrared IrDA adapter from Amazon or eBay. I am thinking of trying this, but haven't bought one yet. I don't know whether it will work.
