Initial water supply problem to washing machine

PRODUCT - FJDR1666W Zanussi front end washing machine

When the washer is turned on, with a load inside, you can hear the water pump pumping but there is no water going inside the drum. I then open the washing detergent tray, pour about 3 litres of water inside, and the machine works correctly thereafter. Please can you advise as to what the problem could be.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, on most washing machines, there could be a couple of reasons why water would not flow in (among others):

  • water supply (least likely) - the incoming water from your pipeline/supply has low pressure, blocked, frozen or cut-off;
  • the water inflow control valve (most likely) - there would be an electrically operated valve that allows water to come into the tub/drum;
  • water inflow pump (likely) - even though the motor is turning and could be hear, it is possible that the actual pump/impeller is not or is damaged and therefore water would not be pumped inside;
  • logic controller (a possibility, hopefully not) - master controller. It opens the valve, turns the pump motor, measure the water level, allows water to come in for a specific time period/cycle.
For parts description and availability specific to your model, pls reference this site. At the moment, I could not locate an online Australian supplier but would post ASAP if located.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.

    Additionally, in most machines, there would be a tech sheet with a list of user actions for most common problems as well as an electrical wiring diagram. They would be either located at the bottom/kick panel or behind the control panel board.

Check to see if there's good water volume coming through the hoses attached to the washing machine. If there is, check to see if the screens inside the water-inlet valve are clean. (The water-inlet valve is the device on the washing machine that the fill hoses are attached to.) If they're clean, you probably have a defective water-inlet valve. If so, you should completely replace the valve.

  • Is the water-volume selector switch set properly and are the control panel buttons pressed in all the way?

  • Is there a faint buzzing or humming noise coming from the water-inlet valve? (The water-inlet valve is the device on the washing machine that the fill hoses are attached to.) If you can't hear anything, the water-inlet valve may not be getting any power. If you can hear some noise and there's water present, you may need to completely replace the water-inlet valve.

    Not adviseable as you will be rinsing the clothes in hot water as opposed to cold, this could cause problems such as shrinkage depending upon what you are washing at the time.

    Zanussi washing machine filter

    Open the panel at the bottom right of the front of the washer. Then pull out the drain hose and pull the plug from its end - this will drain most of the water. Then the filter turns anti-clockwise - if it is too stiff to turn by hand I use an open set of pliers or strong scissors to give more grip (It may be an idea to put a cloth between the pliers/scissors and the filter to offer some protection.

    indicated low water pressure from your external supply or blocked filters in the fill hose. turn water off, remove hose and check filter in end of hose - it is just a bit of gauze. also look into the valve and clean out if needed

    There may not be any supply of wanter into the machine; check this by disconnecting the machine pipe and turning on/off the tap to see the water flow.
