Question about Seagate FreeAgent Pro 1TB External USB 2.0/eSATA Hard Drive

1 Answer

My external hard drive is unreadable

My hard drive is unreadable ? I purchased a 1TB Seagate Freeagent and knocked it over, dislodging the usb port from the drive. I purchased a Rosewill hard drive enclose and installed the HD from the Seagate into it.

The 'device manager' program that came with the Seagate flashed 'no drive connected' when I plugged in the USB cable. About 10 minutes later my computer recognized the HD, the usb with green check icon appeared and windows searched for drivers. The drivers were installed and the HD now appears in my device manager.

Device properties show the HD as ST310003 40AS USB Device.

Device type: Disk drives
Manufacturer: (Standard disc drives)
Location: on USB Mass Storage Device

device status: The device is working properly

When I click the Volumes tab, it shows no Disk, Type, Status, Partition Style, Capacity, or anything.

Updating the driver doesn't work. Computer > Manage > Disc Management shows my regular hard drive as Disc 0, and my External as disc 2, but says it's 'unknown' and 'unreadable.'

The properties there show

Disc: Disc 1
Type: Unknown
Status: Unreadable
Partition Style: Not Applicable
Capacity: O MB
Unallocated space: 0 MB
Reserved space: 0 MB

Is there anything I can try to get my computer to recognize the drive?Otherwise I will have to return the external case! I have 400GB of important files, but won't pay for software or data recovery.

Thanks!

Alex

    Thanks for the response zzptichka,

I couldn't listen to those sounds but the HD is making a strange noise. Every 3 seconds it makes a faint buzzing sound.

When the noise stopped, the computer recognized the HD, but I still can't get it to show up as the F: drive as it used to be. I doubt it's the enclosure either.

I have the same problem as above but i have only used the hard drive 12 times since I got it for my birthday. The light indicates that the hard drive is sleeping about 1 minute after the device is plugged in. My machine makes a noise similar to a cd spinning that goes for about 3sec, at 5 sec intervals. None of the sounds on this site sound like my machine.
My life is one this hard drive, as is several episodes of True Blood I am yet to watch! Oh the pain of it all...

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

Can external hard drives be "piggy backed"? I have

Each external device connects to one USB port on your computer.
So, you'll have no problems running two devices at the same time, in different USB ports.

You can try soldering it back, but it may still not work. If your soldering skills are not great, you should probably let someone who does that kind of work for a living try the repairs. Give me a call if you need to.

I have just purchased a Seagate Freeagent 1tb drive and

Yes to all. First, You can share them by setting it as a network, or shared drive. Right click the drive, and choose sharing and security. Set the share name, and then connect it to the other computers by pointing them to this address: \\COMPUTER-IP\SHARE-NAME
Second, the manual should be in the drive when you first got it, but if it got deleted, the only way to get it again, would be to borrow another drive, as it comes with a custom key to extend the software trial to 100 years, and therefore is not hosted online.
Last, You can partition it for free with EASEUS partition manager home. You can get it here: http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
I hope I helped.

Installing 1tb External Hardrive from Freeagent onto Macbook Pro

I would be tempted to format the drive using the disk utility whch can be found under applications and then utilities once opened choose your drive in the left hand window and on the right hand side click on erase. If you are using the Seagate drive for the Mac only, format it as a Mac OS Extended (journaled) Choose your volume format and name and then erase. Hope this helps.

Hard Drive Buzzing and Wont work (Seagate External Freeagent 1TB)

You are in trouble!
The buzzing sound is the heads trying to realign themselves at the beginning of the platter.
You could try putting it on a side and hope gravity helps.
But i'm afraid its broke beyond repair.
