Missing cdrom drive

My cdrom drive is missing on "my computer" I installed a memorex DVD drive and put it as the slave to my PC CD drive. The LED light is on but the icon in my storage is not there for the DVD Drive but only the originial CD drive icon. I can't access my DVD drive at all. I don't know what to do? I put in a CD and then a DVD into the DVD drive and nothing happens? Its useless!

The triggers determining the slave was set to master with the CD rom drive as well...so I had two master drives...kind've stupid. Everything is now working properly!

I was installing a dvd drive, unhooked main power supply in computer, now when I turn on computer it says it needs a systems reboot disc can you help

The computer can't see the hard drive. IF the hard drive is on the same IDE ribbon as the DVD then you have a jumper problem. You need to look at the old cdrom if there was one and jumper new one the same as old one. (Master, slave or cable select) Also while you were digging around inside your computer did you pull the IDE ribbon to hard drive loose from the drive or the motherboard? Are the power connectors still hooked up? Every hard drive ribbon can have one slave and one master drive. Your hard drive should be the master and the cdrom the slave. Some systems are now set to "cable select" that means that the hard drive ribbon has a master connector and a slave connector and that the device (hard drive or cdrom) becomes a master if connected to one connector or a slave if hooked to the other one. If you go into your bios setup when you turn on the computer you should be able to look an see which of the drives or cdroms is hooked up as master or slave. Some will display this information during bootup posting.

Want to add 2nd cdrom

In order to burn from CD to CD you don’t need a second CD-ROM. Nero will save the CD image on the hard drive and then will ask you to put a blank CD and record the image from the hard drive to the CD.
To install a second CD-ROM use the same bus to the hard drive and set the jumper to “slave”. Good luck.

My cd drive will read cds but not dvds i try to istall somethig it wont work

Hi dkush29306,

while the other two posters have pointed out the obvious, that CDROM drives only read CDs, and that you need a DVD drive to read DVDs, i would like to add something to this.

I will asume you have a CDROM COMBO Drive, that *should* play CDRs and DVDs.

if you find it does spin CDs up and read them, but not DVDs then i might be able to offer some suggestions.

firstly, make sure there is no software conflicts (like two CD Writing softwares trying to use the CD Drive at the same time.. ). you shouldnt have to worry about drivers for the CDROM, as the default OS ones should suffice. but they may be corrupt. you could goto Device Manager if you are on Windows, and uninstall and reinstall the driver for the CDROM. it should find it automatically in the install wizard.

ok at this point i don't see how software could cause any other issue , so we should look at it being a hardware issue:

if you have the ability, try changing the IDE Ribbon Cable that connects the CDROM to the Motherboard. if that doesnt work, try changing which plug in the IDE cable the CDROM plugs into. these plugs usually have a blue plug at one end (motherboard end), and there is two plugs at the other end, or master and slave. keep the jumper pin on the CDROM set to Cable Select, so you dont need to change it to slave, when its plugged into the slave port, or master pin if set to the master port.

finally, if none of that helps (and it probably won't ) you might find that the actual fault is due to the laser in the CDROM not focusing tightly enough and therefore cannot read the data on a DVD ROM because of this. the only way to tell if this is ok or not, is to plug it into another computer and see if it can read DVDs.

you might just be better off spending 20-50$ and buying a new CDROM Combo drive from your local computer hardware store.

To fix the error by editing the registry, perform the following steps:

Exit and close all applications currently running on your PC.On

Start > Run type Regedit and press the Enter key.

Next, navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Delete any of the following registry entries if they exist under this key:

LowerFilters

UpperFilters

Restart your PC and open My Computer to ensure that the CD-ROM drive is visible.

that should fix it.

Memorex recorder

Memorex has a support site that will tell you where to download your proper driver. I just purchased a DVD +/-RW that came without drivers and installed it in line leaving my CD as master on the buss strip (the end). Did not want to play until I put it on the middle or slave connector (thinking my computer or hookup cable is backwards now although it shouldn't be with their only being one way to attache it to the drive and motherboard!). Try Cable select and then try it alone and then try the open slot

Missing cdrom drive

Is the LED of your CD ROM blinking? If yes then go to device manager by right clicking the My Computer icon and then click the Properties command. In the Properties window select the Hardware tab and then click the device manager. Is the CD ROM entery there! yes> right click and enable the device. If no then reformat your hard disc and reinstall.
In case your CD ROM's LED is not blinking (Rarest case) then simply check all the cables connected to it, atleast the power cable. if it is still not working, your CD ROM got damaged and there is a time to change it.
