Re: about a router I just bought
That "large phone chord" is actually an ethernet cable or RJ-45. Its very similar to the RJ-11 telephone cable but they cannot be interchanged. One is strictly for networking computers the other one is only for telephone.
here's a good video that explains how to hook it up, youtube has a lot of good videos on the topic of routers

Are you trying to setup Linksys router? You can run the installation CD to setup Linksys router or you can do it without installation CD also. Connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable. Open the setup page of the router. Change the Internet connection settings. Create a new wireless network. Connect to the network.
You can go to the Linksys website at http://www.linksys.com and install the Drivers from there. The drivers on the DVD are probably outdated anyways so installing from the website assures you're getting the latest drivers.
The modem looks like a cable modem from what I have found. You should press the small reset button on the back of the router for about 3 seconds and it should go back to factory settings. Connect the router to the modem and unplug power to the modem, then power it back on and the modem should recognize the router. If this works make sure to login to the router and set passwords and security to something other then the defaults. The Linksys routers usually are addressed at 192.168.1.1 with a default username blank and password of admin. Good Luck
Since you don't have the setup CD of the router the only way to make everything work here is to manually reconfigure the router by accessing its setup page that is inside the router where you can do and reconfigure the router back and if you're not aware on how to do that you can contact Linksys tech support to walk you through with the process they are open 24/7 this is the number 800-326-7114 call them anytime....
You can check if the problem is with the internet connection going to the Wii or just the wireless connection.
When you loose connection, check the Wii's ip address. If it does not have an ip address(or ip is 169.xx.xx.xx) that means that the Wii is disconnecting from the wireless network. You can then try other wireless channels on your router.
If the Wii is still getting an ip of 192.168.x.x, that means that the problem is the internet from the router. You might need to forward ports on the router for your Wii.
to find the exact version no, look at the bottom of your router at the top lefthand corner you would find a linksys logo and right below the logo you would find the model no wrt54gs and to the right of the model no you would find the ver no, it will be very small and tiny..
