Question about Ingersoll Rand Type 30 Reciprocating Air Compressor 5 Hp, 80 Gallon, 230 Volt 3 Phase, Model# 2340N5
The IRss3 pump has reed valves that will not seal properly if dirt or other debris settles on the surface of the seat. Indication of faulty reed valves or head gaskets is very hot discharge air, air discharged from intake and / or low pressure. Simple test is to check for suction at intake when the compressor reaches 80psi. Air should not be discharged from intake. Remove head and valve plate and inspect / replace parts as needed. Parts are available from WWW.grainger.com. Good Luck, happy holidays.

I have the same compressor (10yrs old), and now have the same symptoms and pressure limit issue. I will check and dismantle if necessary as described above. Great tips BTW !!! The compressor's parts sticker gives the following part numbers

I have the TS5, similar problem. You most likely need
the valve plate kit (valves not sold separately) to the
tune of $200, available from Ingersoll Rand. This is
a compressor pump with lower initial cost, but repairs
are expensive, since only whole kits are sold, when other
manufacturers sell the parts separately, very cheaply.
This pump turns at about twice the RPM as higher quality
pumps, and uses a cheap reed valve design. Just call IR and
you can order the parts from them. They have good
tech support. The upside is that this is an easy repair.
