The IRss3 pump has reed valves that will not seal properly if dirt or other debris settles on the surface of the seat. Indication of faulty reed valves or head gaskets is very hot discharge air, air discharged from intake and / or low pressure. Simple test is to check for suction at intake when the compressor reaches 80psi. Air should not be discharged from intake. Remove head and valve plate and inspect / replace parts as needed. Parts are available from Good Luck, happy holidays.

I have the same compressor (10yrs old), and now have the same symptoms and pressure limit issue. I will check and dismantle if necessary as described above. Great tips BTW !!! The compressor's parts sticker gives the following part numbers

  • filter element: 70243712
  • valve kit: 97338107
I have checked the Grainger website, and cannot find the specific filter or valve rebuild kit(s). Does Grainger have these listed under different part numbers, and if so ... anyone know what they are ?

I have the TS5, similar problem. You most likely need
the valve plate kit (valves not sold separately) to the
tune of $200, available from Ingersoll Rand. This is
a compressor pump with lower initial cost, but repairs
are expensive, since only whole kits are sold, when other
manufacturers sell the parts separately, very cheaply.
This pump turns at about twice the RPM as higher quality
pumps, and uses a cheap reed valve design. Just call IR and
you can order the parts from them. They have good
tech support. The upside is that this is an easy repair.

Hi Guys, I have a Ingersoll Rand Compressor 7/41. Machine runs perfect but I have noticed that the Exhaust & Manifold is glowing red hot. I know they heat up but this is excessive heat. Any idea what...

The muffler may have a blockage in it? Is the exhaust inabdormally quiet? That's the culprit! Someone has stuffed something in the exhaust pipe exiting the compressor housing body!

Ingersol rand model SS3-E runs but does not build any air pressure. Air just blows out the intake filter.

the back pressure valve has failed it costs about 15.00 and can buy from any truck parts store That's Peterbilt trucks or any large truck stores it's one of two sizes 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch when you pull it off be sure you know which way the air flow is or it will not build up.

What is the torque for head bolts on my ingersoll rand ss3 compressor?

I can't say from their manual, but I've never rebuilt a compressor (and I check every one with the mfg) for which the head bolt torque isn't in the range of 25 ft. lbs. to 40 ft lbs. If you can't find it, torque to 30 or 35 and you've got it knocked.

Need manual for IR ss3-e compressor

I have worked on many IR compressors with the SS3 pump. A parts list can be faxed to you from grainger, use part #1WF72 for the pump only. Or try this address :

Order pump parts from grainger. The other parts can be replaced with generic grainger parts such as the pressure switch, check valve, capacitors etc. for the motor. If you are having a specific issue with your unit please detail the problem on your next post or email me. I will be glad to work thru the problem or modification. Good Luck!
